A-roads to Summer competition: Terms and conditions

Terms and conditions for our summer competition, with prizes of vouchers worth up to £500.

1. The promoter

The Promoter of this competition is National Highways, the government company charged with operating, maintaining and improving England's motorways and major A-roads. Its principal office is based at Bridge House, 1 Walnut Tree Close, Guilford, Surrey, GU1 4LZ.  

2. The competition 

2.1. These terms and conditions apply to the “A-roads to Summer” competition running on the Promoter’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) – (“the Competition”).   

2.2. Entries must comply with the terms and conditions set out below. Any entries that do not comply (in the sole opinion of the Promoter) will be disqualified. 

2.2. The opening date for entries is Monday 24 July 2023.  

2.3. The Competition will close on Sunday 10 September 2023 at 11.59pm (“the Closing Date”). All Competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified. 

2.5. The Promoter accepts no responsibility for entries not successfully completed due to a technical fault, technical malfunction, computer hardware or software failure, satellite, network or server failure of any kind. 

2.6. The Entries will be judged by a panel of three judges in September. The judging panel shall be made up of one senior member of the Promoter’s staff, one senior member of National Trust staff and an independent judge. The decision of the judges is final, and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.  

2.8. The Promoter will send the full names of the judges to anyone who requests them, up to one month after the Closing Date. 

2.9. By submitting a Competition entry, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions. 

3. Eligible entrants

3.1. An “Entrant” is a person over 18 submitting a valid entry to the Competition (per condition 4.2). 

3.2 The Competition is not open to National Highways and National Trust employees, volunteers, their partners and their families. 

3.3. Entrants must be a resident in Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland. 

3.4. In entering the Competition, the Entrant confirms that they are eligible to do so and eligible to claim a Prize (as defined in condition 5 below). The Promoter may require the Entrant to provide proof that they are eligible to enter the Competition.

4. How to enter

4.1. Reply or comment to one of our competition social media posts on Facebook or Twitter writing about your special moment, including a video or photo or send us a direct message on Instagram about your special moment including a video or photo. 

We will publish competition posts on our social media channels that include the hashtags #100YearOfARoads and #ARoadsToSummer throughout the competition.  

4.2. Entrants must be over 18 and obtain the permission of the person(s) shown in the image prior to submitting the image as part of this Competition. 

4.3. There is a limit of one entry to the Competition per Entrant. Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed. 

5. The prizes 

5.1. Six winners will each receive a National Trust Holidays voucher worth £500. 

5.2. The holiday is subject to availability and does not include any extras. The winner will be able to pick from the available locations. No cash alternative or refund will be given, and winners must be over 18.  

5.3 The prize to be chosen from the current National Trust Holiday website and cannot be used to purchase National Trust gift cards or vouchers or redeemed against purchases already made. The prize is not valid for Historic House Hotels bookings or those managed by third parties.  

5.4 The Competition winners can use the prize as part payment towards a higher value holiday and pay the balance. The holiday must be booked and taken before 30 June 2024. If the holiday booked is less than £500 in value, the booking will still be deemed full settlement of the Prize and any remaining value cannot be used towards a second break. 

5.5 The National Trust will not be responsible for any other transport or accommodation costs incurred in the acceptance or fulfilment of the prize.

6. Notification of winning entries

6.1. The six winners will be selected by the judging panel in accordance with condition 2.6. 

6.2. Entrants with a winning entry will be notified by direct message on the social media platform they used to enter the Competition and advised of the procedure for receiving their Prize. Winners will be notified by 30 September 2023.  

6.3. The Promoter will make all reasonable efforts to contact and Entrants with a winning entry. If an Entrant is unable to be contacted after such reasonable efforts have been made or has not claimed their Prize within 30 days of the Announcement Date (as defined in paragraph 6.5), their claim will become invalid and the Promoter will be entitled to select a new winning entry in accordance with condition 2.6.  

6.4. No Prize may be claimed by a third party on behalf of the Entrant with the winning entry.  

6.5. The Promoter must either publish or make available information that indicates that a valid award took place. In compliance with this obligation, the Promoter will publish the surname and county of the winners of the Competition, and their winning entries, on its website (“the Announcement Date”).  

6.6. If you object to any or all of your surname, county and winning entry being published or made available, please email the Promoter at  A-roads to Summer competition. In such circumstances, the Promoter must still provide the information and winning entry to the Advertising Standards Authority on request. 

7. Data protection 

7.1. The Promoter will comply with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation when collecting and otherwise processing personal data in connection with this Competition.  

8. Consents and copyright

8.1. All entries must have been legally obtained by the Entrant. By entering this Competition, each Entrant warrants and represents to the Promoter that they have obtained all necessary third-party consents or permissions relating to any entries submitted to the Competition. 

8.2. Entrants must be the sole author and owner of copyright in their entry into the Competition. By entering this Competition, each Entrant warrants and represents to the Promoter that the entry they have submitted to the Competition does not infringe the rights of any third parties, including, without limitation, copyright. 

8.3. Ownership of copyright in each entry will remain with the Entrant. In consideration of entering the Competition, each Entrant grants to the Promoter a worldwide, non-exclusive, irrevocable and royalty-free licence for five years to distribute, communicate to the public and/or reproduce each entry (including, but not limited to, publishing entries on the Promoters’ websites and social media channels), all in connection with the Competition and 100 years of A-roads campaign.  

9. Publication of entries

9.1. The winning entries will be featured in the Promoter’s 100 years of A-roads page on the Promoter’s website and publicity materials including, but not limited to, the Promoter’s website and social media channels, specifically Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and the Promoter’s other publicity materials including, but not limited to, reports, presentations, pop-up banners and other digital platforms. 

9.2. Where an entry is used in any of the Promoter’s publicity materials, the Entrant will be credited. 

10. Removal or disqualification of entries

10.1. The Promoter reserves the right to disqualify any Entrants that breach these Competition Terms and Conditions or any entries that, in the sole opinion of the Promoter, are in any way obscene, violent, abusive, discriminatory, defamatory, fraudulent or otherwise unlawful or would damage the reputation of the Promoter. 

10.2. Where condition 11.1 applies, the Promoter shall remove any affected entries from the Competition and shall remove such affected entries from the Promoter’s websites or social media channels (where such entries have been published). 

11. Limitation of liability 

11.1. As far as is permitted by law, the Promoter will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring because of taking up the Prize except where it is caused by the negligence of the Promoter. Your statutory rights are not affected. 

12. General 

12.1. These Competition Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of England. By entering this Competition, each Entrant agrees to submit to the exclusive authority of England’s courts. 

12.2. The Promoter reserves the right to cancel this Competition at any time. The Promoter reserves the right to amend these rules without notice by posting changes to the Promoter’s website. We will only notify Entrants of changes if we are required to do so by law.
