Working in partnership

The best improvements are shaped by people who understand a place and use its routes.

Working in partnership

Working together for better journeys

We work with national organisations, local authorities, community groups and active travel specialists to:

  • identify barriers to local journeys
  • develop safe and accessible designs
  • understand what communities need
  • connect improvements with wider routes
  • deliver lasting benefits

Walk Wheel Cycle Trust

Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) is a UK-wide active travel charity and custodian of the National Cycle Network.

The charity delivers a range of schemes on our behalf.

Our partnership combines our investment with the Trust's specialist knowledge of walking, wheeling, cycling and local route development.

Active Travel England

Active Travel England is the government agency responsible for supporting high-quality active travel infrastructure.

In March 2024, we signed a memorandum of understanding with Active Travel England which strengthened how we work together on:

  • planning and developing schemes
  • sharing designs and technical knowledge
  • connecting national and local routes
  • achieving the best value from active travel investment

Transport Focus - listening to people using our routes

Transport Focus is the independent watchdog for users of England's motorways and major A-roads.

Its research helps us understand the experiences of people walking, wheeling, cycling and horse-riding alongside or across our roads.

We use this evidence to identify barriers and shape our future improvements.
