A5, A483 and A458 Shropshire Triangle

We’re improving these routes to keep them safe and reliable for everyone who depends on them.

Project information

Overview

The A5, A483 and A458 form the Shropshire Triangle. These routes are essential east–west and north–south links between Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Welshpool, Chirk and the wider border region.

They connect people to key destinations including:

  • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct World Heritage Site
  • Shropshire’s market towns
  • the English and Welsh countryside

As traffic grows and infrastructure ages, we’re investing millions of pounds to upgrade these well-used roads.

Routine maintenance

Alongside these improvements schemes, we'll continue routine maintenance on the A5, A483 and A458. This is part of our daily work to keep the network safe and operational.

Details of this work won’t always appear on this webpage. You can check our daily closures page for details of planned closures on roads we maintain.

Utility companies

Utility companies (gas, water, electricity and suchlike) often work on roads we manage. Where possible, we try to co-ordinate our roadworks with them to minimise disruption to motorists.

Sometimes we can't do this. For example, utility companies don't have to give advance notice when responding to emergencies (like burst water mains or gas leaks).

This means we can't always warn people about potential disruption before utility companies start working.

Utility companies are wholly responsible for telling people (like residents, motorists and local communities) about the impact of their works.

Find out who's responsible for roadworks in your area.

Once complete, our improvements will strengthen key connections across the Shropshire Triangle, improving journey times and reducing unplanned maintenance.

They'll make the A5, A483 and A458 safer, more resilient and more reliable, ensuring these routes:

  • continue to support the communities, businesses and visitors who rely on them every day
  • keep people and goods moving safely and reliably
  • support future growth
