Start of work and public information events
This September we’ll begin essential maintenance work on A38 Willington Bridge, which carries the A5132 Carriers Road over the A38.
To work safely, and to minimise disruption, we’ll do repairs through a phased programme of work.
Phase 1 – September 2026 to August 2027
Phase 2 – September 2027 to June 2028
We’ll use narrow lanes and lane closures to keep the A38 open as much as possible throughout the scheme to minimise disruption.
We’ll also need some overnight closures in place at times for traffic management installation, bridge propping and excavation.

Project information
Overview
We've identified parts of the bridge that need renewing. We'll be:
- doing concrete repairs
- renewing waterproofing
- repairing bridge joint
- renewing safety barriers
- resurfacing
To keep both our workforce and the public safe, the bridge will be closed both ways while work is carried out, with clearly signed diversion routes in place.
The footpath will remain open for pedestrians throughout.
Benefits
By repairing the bridge now, we reduce the need for further disruptive closures in the future.
