Project information
Overview
Eastville Viaduct is an elevated 1.1km section of the M32.
This major transport link from M4 junction 19 (Hambrook Interchange) to Bristol city centre currently carries 85,000 vehicles each day.
The viaduct was built in the 1970s and in past years, it's had minimal maintenance and renewal. As a result, we need to replace or repair parts of its structure.
We're not aiming to increase capacity of the M32. We intend to keep the viaduct safe and open for all users for the rest of its design life
We plan to start main construction works in 2029.
Throughout the scheme, we're committed to working closely with:
- local communities
- businesses
- directly affected landowners
Our work will include:
- repairing and replacing concrete and steel throughout the viaduct structure
- resurfacing the viaduct deck
- replacing bridge bearings and joints
- installing new drains which will discharge to locations agreed with the Environment Agency
- fitting noise barriers where needed
- installing a new central reservation barrier
- replacing road signs
- relocating telecoms services
We'll also modify the bridge deck and central reserve. This will allow us to keep two lanes open for traffic in each direction where possible during works.
Benefits
Our scheme will keep a major transport link within Bristol safe and open to all users.
A renewed structure with appropriate noise mitigation will benefit local residents, businesses and the wider community.
