M27 schemes

The M27 runs along the south coast between Cadnam and Cosham in Hampshire and connects Portsmouth and Southampton along the Solent.

Project information

M27 junctions 5 to 7 concrete overlay

Concrete roads make up almost 400 miles (4%) of England’s motorway and major A-road network.

Our scheme will see a new low-noise surface installed between junctions 5 and 7 to provide smoother, quieter journeys and extend the road’s life span for years to come.

Visit the project webpage

Narrow lanes and lower speed limits are in place on the M27 between junctions 8 and 9, in both directions.

Why we've introduced these restrictions

We found corrosion in the steel inside both bridges at the Windhover Interchange.

To keep you safe, we've closed lane 1 in each direction and restricted abnormal loads.

What we're planning

We're refurbishing both bridges to fix the problem for good. We'll repair the concrete supports, replace the bearings and joints, and renew the waterproofing and parapets.

Once this work is complete, we'll remove the current restrictions.

When this will happen

We expect to start this major refurbishment in spring 2027. We'll share more detail on timings and any closures nearer the time.

About our improvements

We’re working closely with Hampshire County Council who are developing junction 10 so it has links in all directions between the M27 and A32.

The improved junction will support economic growth in the area and the new Welborne Garden Village.

More information is available on the M27 junction 10 improvements scheme page.

While we work between 20 April and 29 July 2026, we'll need to close northern and southern sides of M27 junction 3 in turn overnight.

The junction won't be completely closed at any time.

For more information, visit our south east maintenance schemes page.

Southampton Road bridge is corroding, also its concrete is aging and deteriorating.

Our work will stop further deterioration and extend the life of the bridge.

During our work the M27 stay open.

We'll need lane closures on Southampton Road in July while we work.

We won't need further traffic management until the end of the year.
