    New closure dates announced

There are a number of weekend events taking place in the Portsmouth and Chichester area during September, so we’ve amended our programme of weekend closures to make sure congestion is kept to a minimum.

We've been able to delay the start time of our initial weekend closures to 9pm on Saturday evenings.

This should significantly reduce the impact on the Portsmouth FC home fixture on 5 September and the final day of the Southampton Boat Show on 26 September.

The new closure dates and times are as follows.

    Eastbound weekend closure 1

9:00pm on Saturday 5 September to 6:00am on Monday 7 September.

    Eastbound weekend closure 2

9:00pm on Friday 11 September to 6:00am on Monday 14 September.

    Westbound weekend closure 1

9:00pm on Saturday 26 September to 6:00am on Monday 28 September.

    Westbound weekend closure 2

9:00pm on Friday 9 October to 6:00am on Monday 12 October.

Diversion routes will vary depending on the phase of works during each closure.

Full details of the specific closures and diversions in place for each weekend will be kept up to date on this page, so please check back for the latest information before you travel.

    Other work on the A27

We're also doing some additional, separate work in the area.

Overnight road marking works are taking place on the A27 westbound between Langstone and Broadmarsh.

One further night of closure is needed at Harts Farm, on Saturday 22 August from 8pm to 6am.

The Langstone interchange itself will be open that night, with traffic diverted via:

    • the eastbound A27
    • leaving at Havant
    • and rejoining westbound back towards Harts Farm and the A3(M) junction

Separately, drainage investigation and light vegetation clearance work will take place at A27 Wade Lane on the nights of Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 August, from 9:00pm to 6:00am each night.

This will require a full closure of the A27 eastbound between Langstone Roundabout and the A259 Havant Road.

    Traffic will be diverted via:

    • Park Road North
    • Petersfield Road
    • Bartons Road
    • Horndean Road,
    • Southleigh Road
    • Emsworth Road
    • rejoining the A27 at Havant Junction

Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.

Bridge safety improvements - what we are doing and why

We're replacing steel parapets, waterproofing, and expansion joints on both bridges.

Inspections found serious corrosion, worn waterproofing, and ageing joints causing noise for nearby residents.

Narrow lanes and reduced speed (22 June – 25 August)

Both directions will have narrow lanes throughout this period. A 40mph limit applies through the works.

Approaching from the A3 junction (eastbound) or Warblington junction (westbound), expect a 50mph limit.

    Closures

    15 June to 25 August - A27 Langstone interchange

We'll need a mixture of eastbound, westbound and full closures overnight (9pm - 6am) on weeknights (Monday to Friday).

    Diversion -

Most closures will just be a short diversion taking you off and back on at A27 Langstone interchange.

However, on occasions there will be a slightly longer signed diversion route in place. This is due to additional works also taking place to the East of Langstone.

    September – Full weekend closures

The A27 closes from 9pm Friday to 6am Monday on these dates:

    • westbound – 4 to 7 September and 25 to 28 September
    • eastbound – 11 to 14 September and 18 to 21 September

Avoid this stretch of the A27 if you can during these weekends.

Please follow all signed diversion routes.

    Plan ahead

    • Check traffic conditions before you travel.
    • Allow extra time, especially during peak hours and the school summer holidays.
    • Travel outside peak hours where you can.
