For our safety and yours, we'll close one lane on Brampton Hut Roundabout during the day throughout our work.

Road closures

Monday 28 September to Wednesday 14 October - A1 Northbound exit slip and entry road into services

Closed overnight (9.30pm - 5am) Monday to Friday. The exit from the services will remain open.

Diversion - 

• continue north and exit the A1 at Alconbury (B1043)
• re-join the A1 southbound to exit at Brampton Hut Interchange

Monday 28 September to Friday 16 October - A141 eastbound link between A14 junction 21 and Brampton Hut Roundabout

Closed overnight (9.30pm - 5am) Monday to Friday.

Diversion -

• join the A14 westbound at  junction 21
• travel west to junction 16 (Catworth Interchange) and re-join the A14 eastbound
• travel east on A14 towards junction 23 (Ermine St Interchange), exit and return westbound
• at A14 junction 22 join the A1 northbound and exit the A1 at Alconbury (B1043)
• re-join the A1 southbound to exit at Brampton Hut Interchange

Monday 12 October to Thursday 19 November - inner lane of Brampton Hut Roundabout (north and west quarter)

Closed overnight (9.30pm - 5am) Monday to Friday.

Diversion -

If you want to join A1 northbound or A141 eastbound towards Huntingdon:

• from Brampton Hut Roundabout, travel west on the A141 link towards A14 junction 21
• at the roundabout, return east on the A141 link towards Brampton Hut Roundabout
• take the A1 northbound entry slip for A141 east to Huntingdon, exit the A1 at Alconbury (B1043)
• re-join the A1 southbound to exit at Brampton Hut Interchange and join the A141 eastbound.

Monday 17 August to Tuesday 22 September 2026 - A1(M) junction 9 northbound exit slip

Closed overnight (9pm - 5am) weeknights only, excluding Bank Holiday Monday 31 August.

Hard shoulder and one lane northbound also closed.

Diversion - 

• continue northbound on the A1(M) past junction 9 (Letchworth Gate Interchange)
• exit the A1(M) at junction 10
• re-join the A1(M) southbound
• exit at junction 9 using the southbound exit slip road
• continue to the local road network, including the A505

Diversion - both directions

• follow the A1065 and B1112
• rejoin the A1101 at Icklingham

You'll still be able to travel between A1065 Brandon Road and A1101 towards Mildenhall.

We'll keep part of the roundabout open with two-way traffic lights, so you won't need a diversion.

Closed overnight (9pm - 5am) each night. The junction 28 northbound entry slip road and junction 29 eastbound entry slip road to the A120 will also be closed.

Diversion:

• leave the A12 at junction 28 and join Via Urbis Romanae
• at the roundabout, take the first exit onto Axial Way
• at the next roundabout, take the third exit onto Severalls Lane
• at the next roundabout, take the second exit to continue on Severalls Lane
• turn left onto Ipswich Road (A1232)
• continue to Crown Interchange and join the A120 eastbound

  continue over Crown Interchange
• rejoin the A120 eastbound and continue your journey

14 September - A120 eastbound from Crown Interchange to the A133

Closed overnight (9pm - 5am).

Diversion:

• leave Crown Interchange onto Ipswich Road (A1232)
• at the roundabout, take the first exit onto St Andrew's Avenue
• continue to the Greenstead roundabouts and follow signs for Clingoe Hill (A133)
• continue onto Colchester Road, then Clacton Road
• turn left onto Bromley Road and continue onto Harwich Road
• at Harwich Road roundabout, join the A120 eastbound

To access the A133:

• continue eastbound on Colchester Road through Elmstead Market and Frating
• then join the A133 at the roundabout

These works are associated with A12 Chelmsford to Colchester maintenance.

We're keeping two-way traffic lights on Fryerning Lane bridge while we work with the local authority on a long-term solution.

Works

We repaired bridge damage caused by a road traffic incident in 2018. Our detailed assessment shows the bridge is safe to use, but the edge beams need protection from vehicle loading.

Closures

There are no road closures. Protective barriers near both verges have narrowed the road, so the bridge cannot safely carry two-way traffic at the same time.

Diversions

There is no diversion route. Two-way traffic lights are in place to control traffic over the bridge.

Next steps

We're working with the local authority to identify a long-term solution and will share more information once the next steps are confirmed.

We’ve temporarily closed the west footway on Bascule Bridge after identifying damage to the surface.

We found a defect in the concrete at the start of the footpath which has created a trip hazard for people using the footway. 

Our contractors are investigating the issue and finalising how we’ll repair it.

We’ll start work as soon as possible and re-open the footway once it’s safe to use. 

Bascule Bridge remains open and fully operational. This closure only affects the west footway.

Closed overnight (8pm-6am). 

If you're travelling westbound on the A120 via Marks Farm Roundabout: 

• turn around and head back to the Marks Tey Interchange at the A12 junction 25 
• at the Prince of Wales Roundabout, take the second exit onto London Road and join the A12 southbound 
• continue on the A12 through Hatfield Peverel to junction 19, Boreham Interchange 
• at Boreham Interchange, use Generals Lane Roundabout to join the A131 northbound 
• follow the A131 northbound to the A120 Panners Interchange 
• from the Panners Interchange, continue westbound on the A120 or follow signs into Braintree

• leave the A120 at Panners Interchange and join the A131 
• continue on the A131 to the A12 at junction 19, Boreham Interchange

• at Marks Tey Interchange, re-join the A120 eastbound to continue your journey

We're renewing the weather station on the A120 westbound at Horsley Cross.

The upgraded equipment will provide more reliable information about road conditions and help us manage the road safely during severe weather.

We’ll work during the day between 8am and 4pm.

To work safely, we'll place traffic management along the hatched area of the carriageway. The A120 will remain open while we complete our work.

We’re planning to conduct drainage surveys on the A120 in both directions between Wix and Horsley Cross (Wix Bypass)

We'll also:

• clean the drainage system using high-pressure water (known as jetting)
• undertake CCTV works 

This is to assess the condition of the drainage network to identify any defects or blockages and help inform future maintenance requirements.

5 to 30 October (weeknights only) - A120 both directions, Wix to Horsley Cross

Closed overnight (9pm-5am).

Westbound (from Ramsey):

Traffic will be diverted from the A120 at Parkeston Roundabout taking the first exit onto Parkeston Road. 

• at the roundabout take the third exit onto Main Road (B1352). 
• continue until the roundabout with Oakley Road, taking the first exit onto B1414 (Oakley Road)
• at the next roundabout, turn right to remain on Oakley Road (B1414)
• continuing westbound on B1414 to Thorpe-le-Soken roundabout taking a right onto High Street and then onto Colchester Road (B1033) towards Weeley
• at the next roundabout take a second exit to continue following Colchester Road
• at Weeley Roundabout take the fourth exit onto A133 and continue until to re-join the A120

Eastbound (from Horsley Cross): 

Traffic will be diverted from the A120 at Horsley Cross roundabout. 

• take the first exit onto the B1035 Clacton Road towards Manningtree 
• turn right onto the B1352 New Road
• continue towards Ramsey along The Walls, High Street and Harwich Road
• re-join the A120 eastbound at Ramsey roundabout or continue onto the local road network

We're resurfacing the A14 westbound at Tollbar Lane junction, near Keyston. We'll also refresh the road markings and improve the road surface grip.

One further overnight closure is planned for week commencing Monday 28 September. We'll update this information when the date is confirmed.

We’re refreshing road markings on the A421 between M1 junction 13 at Brogborough and Marsh Leys. This follows work completed last year.

• travel east on the A421 to Elstow Interchange

• continue on the A6 to Clophill Roundabout
• take the third exit onto the A507 westbound
