A14 River Cam Bridge - bridge joints and maintenance

• 28 August 2026

  Planned closures for September to November 2026

  As well as doing repairs on the A14 River Cam Bridge, we’ll also be doing roadside technology upgrades between junctions 33 (Milton Interchange) and 34 (Fen Ditton Junction).

  We start work our main work on Friday 4 September 2026, and expect to finish within 12 weeks.

  We’ll be working overnight between 8pm and 5am on weeknights only, weather permitting. 

  To work safely, we’ll close the A14 in one direction at a time. A 40mph speed limit will remain in place throughout our work for everyone’s safety.

  When the A14 is closed, drivers will need to follow the diversion routes shown in the attached annex.

  Lane closures will also be in place on the A14 eastbound carriageway so we can upgrade roadside technology safely at the same time.

  Closures and Diversions

  Friday 4 September 2026 (1 night) – A14 junction 34 westbound entry slip road and lane 1 closure

  To join the A14 westbound at junction 34:

  • continue south on the B1047.
  • join the A1303 Newmarket Road.
  • follow the A1303 to A14 junction 35, Quy Interchange.
  • join the A14 westbound and continue your journey.

  A14 junction 34 (Fen Ditton Junction) westbound entry slip road diversion

  Monday 7 September to Wednesday 9 September 2026 (3 nights) – A14 junction 33 to 34 eastbound full closure.

  Eastbound diversion:

  • leave the A14 at junction 33.
  • join the A10 northbound.
  • continue to the A142.
  • follow the A142 towards Newmarket.
  • rejoin the A14 eastbound at junction 37.

  A14 eastbound junction 33 (Milton Interchange) to 34 (Fen Ditton Junction) diversion 

  Thursday 10 September to Friday 6 November 2026 (6 weeks) – A14 junctions 34 to 33 westbound full closure

  Westbound diversion:

  • leave the A14 and join the A142 towards Ely
  • join the A10 southbound
  • rejoin the A14 westbound at junction 33.

  A14 westbound junctions 34 (Fen Ditton Junction) to 33 (Milton Interchange) diversion 

  Monday 9 November to Thursday 26 November 2026 (14 shifts) – A14 Junction 33 to 34 eastbound full closure

  Eastbound diversion:

  • leave the A14 at junction 33.
  • join the A10 northbound.
  • continue to the A142.
  • follow the A142 towards Newmarket.
  • rejoin the A14 eastbound at junction 37.

  Repair work below the A14 continues until 28 August 2026

  We're progressing well with the repair works beneath the bridge but the graffiti removal is taking longer than anticipated. 

  We'll continue to work daytime (8am-5pm), Mondays to Fridays only, weather permitting. 

  We’ll work behind the tow paths.

  East and west underside path 

  We're removing graffiti from the bridge supports on both sides of the river.

  West underside path 

  We've completed the repair to the fire - damaged supports on the west side of the bridge.

  Pedestrian and cyclists

  The towpaths will remain open at all times for pedestrians and cyclists. 

  Next phases

  We'll programme the remaining phases of our work for later in the summer, as soon as we've completed the design. 

  We'll return to underneath the A14 in 2027 to install an anti corrosion system to the underside of the bridge.

• 11 August 2026

  Repair work continues in August

  We've finished repairing fire-damaged supports on the west side of the bridge.

  However, it's taking us longer than expected to remove graffiti from bridge supports on east and west paths by the river. 

  We'll continue working behind the tow paths Mondays to Fridays daytime (8am-5pm) only, weather permitting. 

  The towpaths will remain open at all times for pedestrians and cyclists. 

  We'll return to perform anti-corrosion work on the underside of the bridge in 2027.

• 23 June 2026

  Repair work - 6 July to 31 July 2026 

  We've completed our surveys beneath the bridge next to the River Cam. 
   
  We're preparing to start repairs on the west side of the bridge. We'll complete this work in stages

  We'll work daytime (8am-5pm), Mondays to Fridays only, from Monday 6 July to Friday 31 July, weather permitting. 

  We’ll work behind the tow paths.

  East and west underside path  

  We'll remove graffiti from the bridge support on both sides of the river.

  West underside path  

  We'll repair the fire-damaged supports on the west side of the bridge.

  Pedestrian and cyclists

  The towpaths will remain open at all times for pedestrians and cyclists.

  Survey work continues - 9 February to 2 April 2026

  We’re doing survey work underneath the bridge next to the River Cam.

  The survey work is part of a bigger project to refurbish the A14 River Cam Bridge, which is due to start in the summer of 2026.

  We’ll share details of future closures and diversions as soon as they’re confirmed. 

  We'll work weekdays only (8am-5pm, Mondays to Fridays) between Monday 9 February to Thursday 2 April, weather permitting.

  We’ll either be working alongside or on the tow path. 

  For safety, the tow paths under the bridge will have temporary pedestrian diversion routes in place behind the bridge supports while we do this work.

  East underside path 

  We'll be inspecting the underside of the bridge joints with a mobile elevated working platform.

  Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 March - West underside path 

  • We'll be inspecting the underside of the bridge joints using a mobile elevated working platform. The temporary footpath will be fenced off after the surveys are completed, and the path will be re-opened after each day

  Lent Bump Boating

  We're not working between 2 and 8 March due to the Lent Bumps boating event taking place on the River Cam

  Summer 2026

  We'll commence the main repair work later in the summer after reviewing the results of the surveys taken during phase one.

  Survey work from 6 to 8 October 2025

  We’re doing survey work underneath the bridge next to the River Cam.

  The survey work is part of a bigger project to refurbish the A14 River Cam Bridge which is due to start in the new year. We’ll share details of future closures and diversions as soon as they’re confirmed. 

  We'll work weekdays only (8am to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays) between Monday 6 October to Friday 17 October. 

  For safety, the tow paths under the bridge will have temporary pedestrian diversion routes in place behind the bridge supports while we do this work. 

  6 October to 8 October 2025

  East underside path 

  We'll be inspecting the underside of the bridge joints using a mobile elevated working platform. 

  West underside path 

  We'll be inspecting the underside of the bridge joints using a mobile elevated working platform. The temporary footpath will be fenced off after the surveys are completed, and the path will be re-opened.

  Return in 2026

  We'll return in the New Year to complete surveys on the western side and start the main refurbishment works.
