Career insights for local students – March 2022

Careers in the construction industry can varied and rewarding. Events like this allow students to gain an insight to the possibilities and opportunities with National Highways and our supply chain.

Some 400 students from New College, Durham, Easington Academy, Durham Federation, Framwellgate School, Durham Johnston, Delta independent school, Kepier, Trinity New Bridge Academy, Trinity Solutions Academy were given the opportunity to learn about training and career opportunities at an event held at New College Durham.

Representatives from the National Highways Community – a group bringing together the companies working on maintenance and improvement schemes across the North East – gave demonstrations and answered questions.

The community includes representatives from Aggregate Industries, Amey, Carnell, CHC highways, GVA Trees, Jacobs, Morgan Street Furniture (MSF), National Highways, Tarmac TM, Tilbury Douglas and WJ ltd, Seymour Civil Engineering and CECA (Civil Engineering Contractors Association), ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) and Apprenticeship Ambassador Network.

And outside the venue, companies set up demonstrations showing the equipment now used on our schemes.

National Highways North East construction manager, Chris Beadle commented:

“Once again, our community of suppliers and delivery partners have pulled together to inspire the next generation of construction workers, engineers and safety professionals.

“It is so encouraging to see the interest generated and we hope the students will go on to exciting careers in the construction industry.”
