Welcome to the Autumn edition of our community video newsletter – a short film to keep you up to date on our progress and let you know our plans for the future.
In this edition, we give you an update on our plans to reduce our carbon footprint, our first group of apprentices who have been recruited from the local area, and the first 500 businesses who have signed up to our SME directory.

Reducing our carbon footprint
We rely on our roads. They give us a convenient, cost-effective way of travelling and give us the freedom to choose where we live, work and study. But how we build and run our roads must rise to the challenge of our times.
The Lower Thames Crossing is looking at how we can go beyond current practices and make this the greenest road ever built in the UK.
Community Impacts Consultation round-up
We’re now carefully analysing over 3,000 responses sent during the Community Impacts Consultation earlier this summer. These will help further develop the design of the scheme and inform our planning application.
New proposals to maximise the potential of the Thames' shoreline
We're working with the Port of Tilbury and Thurrock Council to update our proposals on the northern bank of the Thames.
The first group of local apprentices have started work
Eight new appreciates have started work on the project following a local recruitment drive earlier this year. The diverse group include school leavers, a qualified teacher and an ex-bank manager.
New educational Minecraft games for schools
We want to inspire the next generation of engineers so have worked with the world’s best-selling video game, Minecraft, to give local school children a go at building a portion of the tunnel for the Lower Thames Crossing.
22,000 hours of volunteering to help local communities
We have pledged at least 22,000 hours of volunteering in the local community during the construction of the Lower Thames Crossing.
Local businesses given head start on Lower Thames Crossing
We have committed to spend at least £1 in every £3 with SMEs and we want to make sure local firms benefit.
The Lower Thames Crossing SME Directory holds a list of contact details of local businesses from a range of disciplines which the main works contractors will use to build a local supply chain. Almost one year on and our directory has over 500 businesses registered!
