Overnight convoy running (8pm - 6am) throughout the works, weather permitting.

A1(M) northbound between junctions 42 and 44 and M1 northbound between junctions 46 and 48.

This will enable us to complete the installation and commissioning of the updated technology and signage in this section.

Diversions

Signed diversions will be in place. A weight restriction will apply through Aberford to discourage traffic through the village.

Latest progress

We're progressing well with improvements to the A1(M) between junction 43 (Hook Moor) and junction 44 (A64/Bramham). 

We've made significant progress over the last few months, with the widening and carriageway surfacing now complete.

We're pleased to announce the opening of the new fifth lane on Saturday 22 August, ahead of Leeds Festival (27-31 August). 

The hard shoulder will remain closed and free recovery will continue until Saturday 5 September.

The 50mph speed limit will remain in place on this section until the installation of the new technology on the overhead gantries has been completed.

Works

We recently replaced the joints on Lumley New Road which carries traffic above the A1M.

We're now needing to undertake maintenance work on the bridge abutments at Lumley New Road (B1284), which sits above the A1(M).

Overnight closures (8pm-6am) will operate in one direction at a time, alternating between northbound and southbound as needed, from 24 July 2026 to Spring 2027.

A 50mph speed restriction will be in place 24/7 for the duration of the works, with narrow lanes under the bridge.

Lumley New Road (B1284)

Traffic lights will be in place overnight (8pm-6am) for pedestrians crossing Lumley New Road.

Pedestrians

Pedestrian access across the bridge will be unavailable until Spring 2027. Alternative arrangements will be in place during this time.

We're replacing parapets and barriers on the A162 north and south bridges, along with essential concrete repairs.

Most closures will take place in September and October, with some additional shifts possible in November. We'll update this page with more dates.

From 1 September - A162 roundabout, north side

Closed overnight (8pm-6am), Monday to Friday.

Diversion:

• continue on the A162 northbound to the A645
• return south on the A162

Closures will alternate between the north and south sides, never both at once. Most works are expected in September and October, with some additional shifts possible in November.

Lane 1 on the A162 northbound and southbound will also be closed throughout, with a temporary barrier and 50mph speed limit in place for everyone's safety.

We're repairing the bridge on the A19 southbound between A174 Parkway and A67 Crathorne Interchange. 

We'll begin on Tuesday 5 May for around six months in total, weather dependent.

Closures and Diversion

Closed overnight (8pm-6am), Monday to Friday. No closures on Bank Holidays.

Closures may not always be in place due to concrete curing times.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place on Redhill bridge at Yarm Road to reduce traffic loading during repairs.

Diversion by:

• the A174 eastbound
• B1365
• and A172 southbound

Local traffic will be diverted by the B1380 and the A1044.

We're replacing outdated traffic light signals on the A194/A184 at Whitemare Pool roundabout. This will include:

• replacing the poles
• lights
• signal controllers
• cabling

We'll work mainly overnight (8pm-6am), but some daytime lane closures may also be needed. We'll use temporary traffic signals to maintain traffic flow throughout

There will also be a mandatory 40mph speed limit for the duration of the work.

From 29 June, Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 3.30pm

Two-way traffic lights will be in place on the A628, between the Woodhead Station access road and Salters Brook Bridge.

Expect delays, especially at peak times.

We'll also need two full two-day closures on the A628 on this section, in both directions, in August.

These closures are currently planned for the following dates:

• 00.01am Monday 10 August to 6am Wednesday 12 August
• 00.01am Monday 24 August until 6am on Wednesday 26 August

These closures are needed due to the size of the crane, which will take up both lanes to move materials to the bottom of the embankment and permanently stabilise the structure.

Further into the works, we'll also require some individual overnight closures.

These are expected to be required between September and December 2026. We'll share details as soon as they’re available.

We’re renewing steel lighting columns and upgrading roadside lighting on the A63/M62 junction 38 (North Cave) westbound exit slip to LED. 

Closures

10 August to 14 September - A63/M62 junction 38 westbound exit slip road

Closed weeknights (8pm-6am).

No closure on Bank Holiday Monday 31 August.

Diversion:

• continue westbound on the M62 to junction 37 (Howden)
• exit and follow directions back to the junction 38 eastbound exit

We’re upgrading the parapets and safety barriers, as well as replacing signage at the bridge which carries the A64 over the River Wharfe near Tadcaster.

During the installation of the new parapets, our team found unexpected issues with the concrete underneath, and this has prevented us from installing the parapet as normal.

Because of this, we’ve had to delay our works to undertake surveys to determine the condition of the concrete and confirm what additional repairs are needed for a suitable solution.

These checks have taken time and are required before we can safely continue.

This is why you may have noticed periods of inactivity whilst we await the results from the surveys.

We've however confirmed a solution which is now being designed prior to remobilisation to site. 

We appreciate your patience while we work through these essential steps.

Please be assured we’re moving quickly get back to site and complete the works reducing the customer impact along the A64.

The bridge carrying the A640 New Hey Road over the M62 near junction 22 (Outlane) is in single-lane running.

Due to corrosion, we can't open two lanes to traffic on the bridge.

We're monitoring the bridge to ensure there are no critical signs of potential structural failure.

We'll need this traffic management until we can repair or strengthen the bridge.  This is likely to be 2027 at the earliest.

In future, we may need to enforce weight restrictions to keep the bridge safe to use.

We'll share more details when they'e confirmed.

We're renewing barriers and streetlights on the A66 between Elton and Yarm to improve safety and energy efficiency.

Most work will be overnight (8pm to 6am), though some daytime lane closures may also be needed.

All laybys will be closed and a 40mph speed limit will be in place throughout.

• Elton junction (entry and exit)
• Thornaby Boathouse junction (entry and exit)
• Long Newton Mill Lane junction (entry and exit)

The A66 mainline will also close overnight on occasion, with traffic diverted via the local road network.

• refurbishing joints on the M1 (upper deck) and A631 (lower deck) at Tinsley Viaduct
• replacing existing 50mph repeater signs with roundels and road markings on the A631.

We've now completed a detailed structural assessment of M18 Greenland Lane bridge, between junctions 6 (Waterside) and 7 (Langham).

The findings confirm that:

• the bridge must remain closed to motorised vehicles
• repairing the existing bridge deck is unfortunately not a viable option.

The bridge remains safe for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians, and the results of the assessment reinforce that the precautionary closure introduced in May 2024 was necessary to protect public safety after complex defects were identified.

What happens next

We're assessing the most suitable long term solution for reinstating a motorway crossing at Greenland Lane.

This could include one of the following options:

• Replacement of the bridge deck on the existing supports
• Replacement of the bridge entirely

Before any demolition can take place, the water and power utilities currently running through the bridge deck need to be diverted.

This diversion work, which will take place beneath the M18, is scheduled for financial year 2026/27. We continue to work closely with affected landowners and utility providers.

The main construction phase to replace the bridge deck or full structure is programmed to begin in financial year 2028/29.

This will allow enough time for the detailed design, approvals and statutory processes required for a project of this scale.

We understand that this closure is causing concern to those who use the bridge and we’ll continue to work with the local authority to ensure minimal disruption is caused.

Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to resolve the issues to reinstate the motorway crossing at Greenland Lane as soon as possible.

We're undertaking specialist surveys to assess the condition of Goole Interchange and Airmyn Bridge so we can plan repairs and strengthening works.

5 to 9 October – A614 Rawcliffe Road bridge deck (9pm–5.30am)

Slip roads remain open.

Diversion for traffic exiting M62 at junction 36:

• continue eastbound to junction 37
• exit onto A614
• turn around at M18 junction 6 and return to junction 36 to take the A614

Diversion for M62 eastbound through traffic:

• continue to junction 37 and exit onto A614 towards Bridlington/York/Howden
• at Howden Spur Roundabout take the third exit onto A614
• merge back onto M62 westbound via the slip road
• exit at junction 36 for A614

Diversion for traffic joining M62 eastbound from A614:

• head north west and join M62 westbound
• exit at junction 35 towards M18
• continue on M18 to junction 6 and take the A614 exit towards Thorne
• loop around the roundabout and re-join M18
• at junction 7 merge onto M62 towards Goole

We're resurfacing the M62 westbound between junctions 36 (Goole) and 35 (Langham), the link roads from M62 junction 35 to the M18 southbound, and the M18 southbound from junction 7 (Langham) to junction 6 (Waterside).

We're also renewing lining, studs and traffic loops to improve safety on these routes.

We'll work overnight, six nights a week (Monday to Saturday), excluding Sunday nights, from 3 August to early October.
