We’re replacing the existing aluminium parapet on Scammonden Bridge with a new steel parapet. We'll start work on 20 April 2026 and expect to finish in January 2027.

M62 eastbound resurfacing scheme
We're using some of the east and westbound overnight closures for the Scammonden bridge parapet scheme to resurface the M62 eastbound between junctions 22 and 24.
We'll be resurfacing overnight, between 1 September and 16 October.
M62 closures are due every weeknight except for the five weeknights between 21 September and 25 September inclusive, when the M62 will remain open in both directions to allow for local authority works planned on the diversion route.

M62 Scammonden Bridge parapet upgrades - 17 August to end of September 2026
We're upgrading the parapets on Scammonden Bridge, which carries the B6114 over the M62 between junctions 22 and 23. New steel parapets will keep the bridge safe for the long term.
17 August to end of September - M62 east and westbound, junctions 22 (Rockingstone Moss) to 24 (Ainley Top)
Closed overnight (8pm-6am), Monday to Friday only.
We originally planned to start these closures on 20 July, but postponed them due to the moorland fires near the A628.
Eastbound diversion:
- use the A672
- A58
- A646
- and A629
Westbound diversion will use the same route in reverse.
M62 junctions 22-24 diversion route map
M62 will stay open on nights of 24 and 25 August
This is to allow the full closure of the A628 from 1am Monday 24 to 6am Wednesday 26 August.
The closures is needed for urgent stabilisation works at Woodhead Cascade.
August Bank Holiday weekend
M62 and B6114 over Scammonden Bridge will stay open on the nights of Friday 28 August and Monday 31 August.

The B6114 over Scammonden Bridge stays closed every weeknight until the scheme finishes in January 2027. Local diversions are in place.

Project information
Scammonden Bridge carries the B6114 over the M62 between junctions 22 (Rockingstone Moss) and 23 (Outlane).
The existing aluminium parapets are being replaced with new steel ones to keep the bridge safe for the long term.
Why our programme has changed
Following feedback from the community about the need to maintain access over the bridge, we’ve redesigned our approach. We will now:
- work on one parapet at a time
- use both daytime and overnight working (8pm–6am)
- keep the bridge open during the day, with a single lane and convoy system
- close the bridge overnight for safety
- keep reduced speed limits on the B6114 and Ryefield Lane West
Because of this revised approach, restrictions will remain in place until the end of January 2027.
What’s happening and when
You may notice increased activity as we set up our site and traffic management. Preliminary works run until 1 June 2026.

M62 overnight closures
To work safely, we’ll close the M62 in both directions between junctions 22 and 24 (Ainley Top) on some weeknights (8pm–6am).
We need to close the M62 in both directions due to the height of the bridge, and to manage the risk of falling debris onto the carriageway as engineers work on the bridge above.
Diversion Route
During these closures, traffic will be diverted by the:
- A672
- A58
- A646
- and A629
We've worked closely with local authority partners to identify the diversion route that is most suitable for all vehicles, including HGVs.
The diversion route takes into account height and weight restrictions, and avoids roads with low bridges.
We've also taken measures such as installing additional signage to help prevent double parking along the diversion, especially where the route passes through residential areas.
We'll continue to monitor the situation and work with our partners to take any further action necessary to help traffic flow as smoothly and safely as possible throughout.

The bridge remains open during the day with traffic signals.
Overnight closures
We'll close the B6114 over the bridge overnight (8pm–6am).

- Stainland Road (B6113)
- Greetland Road (B6113)

- Oldham Road (A672)
- Ripponden Road (A672)
