M62 Scammonden Bridge parapet replacement
We’re replacing the existing aluminium parapet on Scammonden Bridge with a new steel parapet. We'll start work on 20 April 2026 and expect to finish in October 2026.
Scammonden Bridge carries the B6114 over the M62 between junctions 23 (Outlane) and 22 (Rockingstone Moss) in Calderdale. It's also known as Rainbow Bridge.
Our upgrades are vital to the long term safety and integrity of this structure.
How we'll work
We'll need to fully close the M62 in both directions between junctions 22 and 24 (Ainley Top) for some periods while we work.
We have to close the road to protect both road users and our workforce. We'll share further updates on closures when they’re confirmed.
Start of works delayed
Following feedback from residents, businesses and landowners, we've delayed the start of this scheme while we develop a revised programme of work.
The updated plan will aim to maintain access over the bridge wherever possible, though there will still be some periods of restricted access.
The bridge may need to close temporarily to allow us to install traffic management and safety measures.
We'll share confirmed dates for any closures as soon as they are available. A signed diversion route will be provided during any closure periods.
The following diversion route will be in place during any periods of closures.
Diversion
If you're driving eastbound:
- leave the M62 at junction 22
- the take the A672, A58, A646 and A629
- re-join the M62 at junction 24 (Ainley Top)
If you're travelling westbound, follow this route in the opposite direction

B6114 bridge closure
Due to the narrow width of Scammonden Bridge, we'll also need to close the B6114 over the bridge for six months.
Lane closures alone wouldn't give us a safe working area.
We apologise for any inconvenience. Thank you for your patience while we complete this essential safety work.
