Increase in numbers of cars entering roadworks – drivers please be vigilant

To keep the public and roadworkers safe we’re encouraging drivers to take extra care when driving along the A19 in the north east, between Norton and Wynyard.

In just two months 200 drivers have mistakenly entered a construction site putting roadworkers in danger and interrupting work on the scheme. To date we have lost over 24 hours of working hours on the project, as we’ve had to down tools to ensure the safety of the drivers involved.

Many drivers who have entered our workspace have done so accidentally, either following their satnav or other vehicles into coned-off areas. Many have mistakenly thought they were turning off onto sliproads to exit the A19.

We’ve introduced improved signage, including electronic messaging signs, and road markings to improve driver safety. Some works access points have also been closed.

Most of the drivers involved in the recent spike in cases have explained they either thought it was the Norton or Wynyard exit-slip road, followed work vehicles, or followed other non-work vehicles into the restricted area.

As a result we have developed the following top tips:

  • Look ahead – follow signs for exits, not your satnav
  • Be alert – don’t follow works vehicles into areas where we’re working
  • Make sure you are keeping to the speed limit
  • Follow instructions from roadworkers – if you enter a works area or break down, wait for help and listen to advice from roadworkers who will safely return you to your journey
