A1 Scotswood to North Brunton and Birtley to Coal House support almost 100 ex-servicemen

Building Roads and Heroes

Today, we celebrate the last group of learners from the Building Heroes on-site highways skills academy programme at Blaydon as part of the A1 improvements at Scotswood and Birtley.

The initiative that has made a significant impact on the lives of nearly 100 ex-servicemen by providing them with vital skills and experience in the construction industry.
This celebration is further enriched as Building Heroes marks its 9th anniversary. Chief Executive, Karen Jefford, celebrated the occasion with a visit to the Blaydon Hub to commemorate this important milestone and personally congratulate the graduates.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our delivery partner, Costain and Gateshead College, for delivering the training as part of the A1 Scotswood to North Brunton and Birtley to Coal House projects.

While this marks the conclusion of the programme in Blaydon, Building Heroes is not bidding farewell. Instead, they are actively developing plans to continue this impactful programme in the region.
