Completed improvements to the A1 provide more reliable journey times.

Roads Minister, Richard Holden officially opens A1 Scotswood to North Brunton and views progress at A1 Birtley to Coal House on first Ministerial visit to North East.

The Minister started the visit by celebrating the successful completion of the A1 Scotswood to North Brunton scheme with National Highways CEO Nick Harris, key stakeholders and the project team including three apprentices.

Later in the day, the Minister saw construction in action at the A1 Birtley to Coal House compound at Allerdene, just off junction 67. He was shown around by project manager Helen Burrow and Costain’s construction manager, Sarah Boyne.

The tour showed the Minister where the new alignment of the A1 was being built and the piers already constructed to support beams for the new Allerdene bridge which will carry the A1 over the East Coast Main Line.
