Traffic Officers Joseph Esposito and Claire Beardsmore recently visited year 6 and reception classes at Wood End Primary School in Wednesfield as part of a careers day.

The children found out about the role of traffic officers and control room staff in responding to incidents and helping road users. They were then given the chance to explore a traffic officer vehicle to see the equipment carried and technology used before taking part in a “test your strength” game.

Joe and Claire were accompanied by Senior Regional Communications Manager Ian Garfield whose five-year-old daughter Evie attends the school.

Ian said: “Engaging with young audiences like this is a really great way to teach them the important role our Traffic Officers do in keeping everyone safe. Maybe the next time they’re travelling with their families on the motorway they’ll see one of our patrols and remember how we are there to help those who run into difficulty.

“Reception children certainly enjoyed looking in and around our vehicles. Maybe we met a Traffic Officer of the future during our visit.”

Matthew Hunt, Deputy Headteacher at Wood End Primary School, said: “Our children absolutely loved their visit from the National Highways team. We really enjoyed learning about the role of a Traffic Officer, learning about the car – and testing our strength! We'd like to thank Joe, Claire and Ian for taking the time to visit us and for keeping us safe on the motorways!"
