Summer 2026 maintenance
We're maintaining the A3 in and around the Hindhead Tunnel this summer and autumn.
This work will keep the road and tunnel safe, improve surface conditions and extend the life of the road.
The Hindhead Tunnel hasn't been resurfaced since 2011, so this is an important programme of investment.
What we're doing
On the A3 between Thursley and Hindhead, we'll be:
- resurfacing the road
- sealing joints
- renewing road markings and high friction surfacing
- and repairing defects including cracks and potholes
In the Hindhead Tunnel, we'll be:
- replacing defective LED road studs
- installing a new intelligent lighting system
- planing and resurfacing the tunnel road surface
- and renewing road markings
Most of the work will happen overnight, when traffic levels are lower. The noisiest work will finish before 11pm to keep disruption to local residents to a minimum.

Weeknight closures for lighting upgrades - November 2023 - March 2024
We’re working to replace some of the lighting in both bores of the Hindhead Tunnel to improve safety and visibility. Work is due to start on weeknights from Wednesday 15 November till March 2024. We’ll only need to close one entrance to the tunnel at a time and use a contraflow system, so you’ll still be able to travel through. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during our safety upgrades.
Please remember that closure details can change at short notice. For the most up-to-date information, please visit our daily closures page.
Project information
Overview
We carry out regular maintenance of the tunnel to keep it safe and working properly. When we do maintenance we try to avoid fully closing the tunnel and use a contraflow system instead.
Benefits
The Hindhead Tunnel contains a range of technology. One of the latest additions are the ‘Swift Gates’ which were added in 2022.
