    June update

    A590 closure date change

We recently provided an update about overnight closures of the A590 at Cross-a-Moor.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, there has been a change to our schedule. The closure planned for Saturday 11 June has been rearranged to Monday 13 June 2022 (9pm to 6am).

The A590 will be closed between Lindal-in-Furness and Daltongate traffic lights in Ulverston. A clearly signed advanced diversion route will be in place for all traffic.

Access for residents will always be maintained. However, there will be certain times when local diversion routes must be followed as it will not be safe to travel through the work area. Our site team will be available to assist drivers at the closure points during these times.

Access to the A590 will not be available from Carley Lane, Seg Lane, Cross-a-Moor and Main Road.

Thank you for your continued patience and please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this work may cause you.

    Latest pictures highlight scheme progress

Newly released aerial images show the progress made on the A590 Cross-a-Moor junction improvement scheme, ahead of its completion later this month.

We’re currently carrying out the final phases of work, which includes installing new kerbs, resurfacing and landscaping.

Once completed the new junction will help reduce congestion and improve safety for our customers.

    May update

We’d like to thank customers for their continued patience while we construct the new roundabout. We’re pleased to confirm that the current planned scheme completion date is mid-June, which is earlier than we anticipated.

As the end of construction nears, we need to close the A590 overnight (9pm to 6am) to complete final surfacing work.

To allow us to safely carry out our work, the A590 will be closed between Lindal-in-Furness and Daltongate traffic lights in Ulverston. The following clearly signed advanced diversion route will be in place for all traffic.

Closures will be in place on the following:

Dates Work to be completed Closure times
Tuesday 24 May to Wednesday 25 May 2022 A590 surfacing to construct roundabout. 9pm to 6am
Monday 6 June to Saturday 11 June 2022 A590 surfacing from the Seg Lane junction to the Main Road junction. And installing road markings and studs. 9pm to 6am

We also require a closure of Main Road and Cross-a-Moor from Thursday 26 May to Wednesday 1 June 2022. This is so we can resurface the roads and install kerbs. The closure dates will be shared with residents closer to the time.

From Friday 27 May 2022 the roundabout will be open to traffic, including the new link roads. The existing Main Road and Cross-a-Moor junctions will be closed to traffic.

    Main Road closure

We’re planning on closing Main Road, Swarthmoor between the A590 and Park Road. This will enable us to safely install drainage for the new wetland area.

We'll be closing Main Road from 10am Friday 25 March, until 6am Monday 28 March 2022.

There will be no through route between Trinkeld Avenue and Park Road while works are carried out.

Residents that access properties from Main Road and Trinkeld Avenue will be able to use the A590 junction - including the right-hand turn - to ensure access is maintained across the weekend. All other traffic accessing Swarthmoor should follow the signed diversion route.

The residents of Park Field will not be able to access Main Road and will be required to use Park Road. Residents of the Vicarage on Main Road will also need to use the A590. While residents of Maple View on Main Road will be required to use the signed diversion route.

Please note that when the closure is removed, the right-hand turn ban will be back in force.

All other traffic will be required to follow a signed diversion route, but access for emergency services will always be maintained. Our site team will also be in place to assist you if required.

    October update

It's been a busy few weeks for the team as we continue to make good progress on the scheme.

    So far we've:

    • started building the northern and southern new link roads have started. We've brought this forward to make the most of the dry weather we experienced in September.
    • continued the drainage for the new wetland area with the excavation nearly completed
    • started to divert utilities such as water and electricity. This will run from October to December.
    • continue with the new link road formation between October and December, installing the drainage and kerb lines

Next month, we will start planting and seeding with the scheme on track to finish July 2022

    Vegetation clearance work update

We were previously planning to clear the vegetation during February and March. This was planned around bird nesting season, which typically extends from March until August. However, due to a delay in the completion of the design of the project, we have taken the decision to postpone the vegetation clearance work so that it can take place alongside the main construction work – which is still scheduled to take place within the 2021/22 financial year (1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022).

We will provide further details to the community on the revised programme as soon as this becomes available.

    Microsoft Teams information events

Our Microsoft Teams events will continue to take place. If you have any questions you would like to ask our team about these works or the improvement scheme itself, please join one of our events.

Reminder – site preparation work is about to begin

This is a reminder of the upcoming site preparation work. This will include the removal of hedgerows and some trees. We need to remove the existing vegetation as they fall inside the layout of the new junction. Click here to see what vegetation is being removed.

Work to remove the vegetation starts on or shortly after 15 February for approximately two weeks, and will take place during daytime hours. The work will be carried out away from the road, causing very little disruption to road users and pedestrians. We may need to use temporary traffic lights for safety reasons however, this will be during off-peak hours for limited periods only.

Once the scheme is complete, we will work with our partners to develop and deliver a re-planting strategy plan. We’re aiming to increase biodiversity in the area by replanting a variety of species including native hedgerow, wildflower bulb and tree planting.

    Upcoming activity on site

    Survey work

Over the coming weeks, we plan to carry out some surveys on site. The work will take place during the day. Most of the work will be carried out away from the road causing very little disruption to road users and pedestrians. During this phase, you may notice an increase in noise levels, however this will be minimal.

    Site preparation

In the new year we’re proposing to start the preparation phase of work. This will include vegetation clearance, movement of material and drainage/ flooding improvements. Work will take place during the day, and on occasion some overnight work may also be required.

The work will be carried out away from the road, causing very little disruption to road users and pedestrians. We may need to use temporary traffic lights for safety reasons however, this will during off-peak hours only.

    Main construction

We’re still in the early stages of programming this phase of the scheme and therefore we’re unable to provide confirmed dates for when work will begin on site. However, we’re aiming to start around summer 2021. Once this has been finalised, further communication will be provided closer to the time.

Project information

Overview

Located at the A590 Ulverston Road and Main Road junction, we plan to delivery a highway improvement project called A590 Cross-a-Moor.

The scheme will entail constructing a new roundabout. We will also build brand new link roads, which will connect into the existing local road network. As part of the scheme we will also carry out environmental improvements and put in measures to alleviate flooding in the area.

View our graphic to see what the new highway improvements will look like.

While the scheme is being delivered by National Highways, this is a collaborative venture between ourselves and Cumbria County Council, South Lakes District Council and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership.

The £9.5m scheme will help to reduce congestion and improve safety, as well as support over 1000 new homes being built. In addition to this, we will also:

  • construct a new wetland area to ease flooding in Swarthmoor. Around the wetland area, a pedestrian footpath and seating will be installed, creating a recreational site for the community
  • improve bio-diversity by planting a variety of species including native hedgerow
