Timeline - M25 junction 28 improvement scheme

July 2022 - Start of preparation work
This will include clearing vegetation, diverting utilities, and a compound being set up to provide welfare and offices. There will also be teams carrying out surveys, including archaeologists working around the area of the Maylands aerodrome.

August 2022 - Gas main diversion
We’ll be working with Cadent Gas to get a gas main moved from August 2022. The new route will be dug using a specialist tunnelling machine.

October 2022 - Start of main construction
This will include earthworks to reshape the landscape, starting to install drainage and preparing the ground to start building the multiple bridges. You may also notice access roads being laid to help us move around the site.

October 2022 - A12 eastbound exit slip
There will be a couple of nights of narrow lanes and lane closures on the A12 exit slip as we start this work. The rest will happen away from the network until construction is finished.

October 2022 - M25 anticlockwise entry and exit
There will be some changes to the road markings on the M25 anticlockwise as we start this work. The rest will happen away from the network until construction is finished.

November 2022 - Drainage and waterway diversions
We’ll be starting to install drainage and insert culverts to help water flow under the new links. The Ingrebourne and Weald Brook will also be diverted.

December 2022 - M25 to A12 eastbound loop road and Duck Wood bridge
We’ll be starting piling and construction work on the new loop road and Duck Wood bridge.

Winter 2022 - Pond creation
Work on the new ponds begins. These ponds manage storm and surface water, while providing a home for wildlife.

Spring 2023 - Bridge work
Earthworks and piling start for the construction the other three new bridges. These bridges allow traffic to move around the new links.

Gas main diversion complete.

Autumn 2023
Alder Wood bridge complete.

Spring 2024
Mayland bridge complete. New A12 eastbound exit slip complete and open to traffic.

Spring 2024 - Road closures start
We’ll need to have road and lane closures to connect the new roads to the existing network, move traffic to the new links, carry out work on the gantries and signage, and paint on the new road markings. These will continue until the project is complete.

Summer 2024
Duck Wood bridge complete. New M25 entry slip complete and open to traffic.

Autumn 2024
Grove bridge complete.

Autumn 2024 - Gantry and signage improvements
We’ll be working to improve existing and install new gantries and signage to help drivers found their way around the new junction.

Spring 2025
Gantry and signage improvements completed.

Summer 2025
Improvements open to the traffic. Planting and landscaping will continue for a short time after the road is open.
