A421 resurfacing and junction improvement near M1 junction 13

We’ve been carrying out work to widen the entry and exit slip roads on the A421 junction with Salford Road. We are now also improving the road surface on the A421 near junction 13 of the M1 at Milton Keynes.

    Planned road closures from 13 to 17 November 2023

    We have some planned night time work taking place between the hours of 10pm and 6am on the dates shown in the table below.

    Please be considerate of residents living along the diversion routes when travelling during these closures. We close the road once traffic flows are at their lowest, and all planned works are subject to change depending on weather conditions or any unforeseen circumstances. 

    Please note that whilst the project to upgrade the M1 between junctions 13 to 16 has been completed, there is work being carried out at junction 15a of the M1. This is being carried out by the Segro Logistics Park (winvic) in Northampton. Please visit their website for further information on their closures that may impact your journey. As part of that project, work to reconstruct the M1 carriageway on the junction 15 slip roads, junction 15 roundabout and A45 began in May 2021.

    A421 resurfacing, 13 to 17 November 2023

    We are doing work to improve the road surface on the A421 near junction 13 of the M1 at Milton Keynes.

    The work will take place overnight from 8pm to 6am on 13 to 17 November 2023.

    When the A421 is closed: 

    • non motorway traffic can use the A5 southbound past Little Brickhill, then take the Sheep Lane exit off the roundabout to Woburn, Newport Road, then the B5704 to the A507 then A421/M1 junction 13.
    • motorway traffic can take the A4146, Tongwell Steet, Childs Way and then A509 to M1 junction 14, then take the M1 southbound to exit at junction 13 and re-join the A421.

    Road closures

    We’ll need to close a section of the Salford Road at the A421 junction, the entry and exit slip roads.

    We’ll do this work between 8pm and 6am on weeknights from Monday 9 January to July 2023, to help reduce disruption.

    Dates and time may change due to weather conditions.

    Diversion

    Traffic looking to join the A421 east will take Salford Road north through Hulcote and Salford onto Broughton Road to cross the M1, then take Fen Street and head south on Newport Road, then south on the A421 to return to junction 13. Traffic travelling on the A421 west will cross the M1 to remain on the A421 and follow this diversion in reverse.

Project information

Overview

We’re carrying out work on the A421 junction with Salford Road. Work will include widening of the entry and exit slip roads, a speed limit reduction and improvements to signage and road markings. 

The entry and exit slip roads to and from Salford Road to the A421, plus Salford Road itself between the slip roads, will be closed.

Traffic using the A421 roundabout south of the M1 will not be affected.

Once work is complete, drivers will benefit from a safer and better-defined road surface.
