A14 junctions 38 - 42 maintenance works
We're maintaining the A14 between junctions 38 (Kentford) and 42 (Bury St Edmunds) from 18 May to 19 June 2026. Works include resurfacing, refreshing road markings and replacing cat's eyes.
Closures and diversions
Due to hot weather and heavy rain in June, we’ll be returning this weekend to complete our work.
Overnight weekend closure
Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July - A14 eastbound between junctions 38 and 42 (Westley Interchange)
Closed overnight (9pm to 5am)
Diversion
Traffic travelling eastbound on the A14 via junction 38 should follow the signed diversion onto the A11 northbound:
- stay on the A11 to the London Road / Thetford Bypass roundabout
- use the roundabout to turn around and rejoin the A11 southbound
at the end of the Elveden Bypass, leave the A11 and merge onto London Road - turn left onto Elveden Road and continue to the A134
- turn right onto the A134 and continue south
- at the third roundabout, take the third exit onto Compiegne Way (A134)
- continue on Compiegne Way to A14 junction 43, St Saviours Interchange
- from there, traffic can rejoin the A14 eastbound and continue its journey

Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.
Background
The A14 is a vital route connecting Felixstowe port to the North, Midlands and East of England, carrying local, regional and international traffic.
While we know closures are disruptive, this essential maintenance will extend the life of the road and reduce the need for more significant works in the future.
