A14 junctions 38 - 42 maintenance works
We're maintaining the A14 between junctions 38 (Kentford) and 42 (Bury St Edmunds) from 18 May to 19 June 2026. Works include resurfacing, refreshing road markings and replacing cat's eyes.
Closures and diversions
Monday 18 May to Saturday 6 June - A14 eastbound between junctions 38 and 40 (Higham Interchange)
Closed overnight (9pm to 5am), Monday to Saturday.

Traffic travelling eastbound on the A14 via junction 38 should follow the signed diversion onto the A11 northbound:
- Stay on the A11 to the London Road / Thetford Bypass roundabout.
- use the roundabout to turn around and rejoin the A11 southbound.
- at the end of the Elveden Bypass, leave the A11 and merge onto London Road.
- turn left onto Elveden Road and continue to the A134.
- turn right onto the A134 and continue south.
- at the third roundabout, take the third exit onto Compiegne Way (A134).
- continue on Compiegne Way to A14 junction 43, St Saviours Interchange.
- from there, traffic can rejoin the A14 eastbound and continue its journey.

Traffic travelling westbound on the A14 via junction 43 should take the third exit from St Saviours Interchange onto Compiegne Way (A134):
- Continue on the A134 through Thetford to the Thetford Bypass / Brandon Road roundabout.
- at the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A11.
- continue southbound on the A11 to A14 junction 38, Waterhall Interchange.
- from there, traffic can rejoin the A14 westbound and continue its journey.

Background
The A14 is a vital route connecting Felixstowe port to the North, Midlands and East of England, carrying local, regional and international traffic.
While we know closures are disruptive, this essential maintenance will extend the life of the road and reduce the need for more significant works in the future.
