    Upcoming closures and diversions

Our final phase of work will take place between Thursday 14 and Friday 22 March. We’ll be working overnight between 8pm and 6am, as follows:

    • A11 southbound closure between Fourwentways and Granta Park, on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 March.

Upcoming road closures in February 2024

Our next phase of work will take place on the A11 southbound between Six Mile Bottom and Balsham Road from Monday 5 February to Thursday 22 February. Work will be done on weeknights between 8pm and 6am.

To do the work safely, we need to close the A11 southbound, and traffic will be diverted via the A14 and M11 (using the strategic traffic diversion).

    Strategic Diversion

Any traffic wishing to join the A11 southbound at Six Mile Bottom will be diverted. Traffic will follow Wilbraham Road and the A1303 to join the A14 westbound at junction 35 (Stow cum Quy), then follow the strategic traffic diversion.

     A11 Entry slip diversion

The A11 northbound exit slip road at Six Mile Bottom will also be closed. Drivers will be directed to continue on the A11 / A14 Newmarket Bypass and exit onto the A1304 (High Street) through Newmarket to return to Six Mile Bottom.

    Other planned work

This work will include resurfacing, replacement of road markings, signs and road studs between junction 35 (Stow Cum Quy) and junction 36 (Nine Mile Hill). This will ensure the A14 remains safe and serviceable for years to come.

The work will take around 6 months, starting on Monday 19 February 2024. We’ll be working mainly on weeknights with some weekends, between 8 pm and 5am or 6am, weather permitting.

The first phase will need road closures on the A14 eastbound, and will so not affect the diversion for when the A11 southbound is closed.

Project information

Overview

We are resurfacing the A11 between Babraham, where it joins the M11 and Six Mile Bottom, where it joins the A14. We will also replace the central reservation safety barrier and signage.

Drivers will benefit from safer and smoother journeys as we resurface the A11 and replace road signage.

Drivers heading northbound will follow the M11 north and then the A14 east to rejoin the A11 near Newmarket.

There will be local diversion routes in place when the A11 is closed in different stages.

Local diversions

Monday 6 March to Tuesday 2 May - A11 southbound from Worsted Lodge to Fourwentways.

Drivers will exit the A11 at Fleam Dyke, taking Cambridge Road west to pass through Fulbourn and then turn left onto Limekin Road. Another left turn will return drivers east on the A1307 Babraham Road to rejoin the A11 at Fourwentways.

Tuesday 2 May to Friday 11 August - A11 northbound from Fourwentways to Six Mile Bottom

Drivers will exit the A11 at Fourwentways to head west towards Cambridge on the A1307 Babraham Road. They will turn right to head north on Limekin Road and then right again to return east on Cambridge Road to pass through Fulbourn and rejoin the A11 northbound at Fleam Dyke.

Friday 11 August to Wednesday 11 October - A11 northbound from Six Mile Bottom to Nine Mile Hill

Drivers will exit the A11 at Six Mile Bottom, taking the A1304 towards Newmarket. They will turn left at the roundabout to head west on the A1303, then join the A14 eastbound at junction 35 (Stow cum Quy) to resume their journey north on the A14/A11.

Thursday 23 November to Friday 2 February 2024 - A11 southbound from Granta Park to Stumps Cross

During the first week of work, drivers heading southbound will exit onto the A1307 at Fourwentways, then turn off towards the services to take Newmarket Road south running parallel to the A11, then at Granta Park either go straight over the roundabout to return to the A11 south or turn right onto the A505 to join the M11 at junction 10.

During the rest of this phase drivers will exit the A11 southbound onto the A505 westbound, following it to Duxford to join the M11 at junction 10 and continue south.
