A590 Newby Bridge to Barrow Banks resurfacing and vegetation works - 9 November to 5 December 2025
Works
We’re about to undertake further repair work on the A590.
This continues the work we started in September and includes:
- resurfacing both eastbound and westbound lanes
- replacing road markings and traffic sensors
- cleaning the drainage
Closures
Sunday 9 November to Friday 5 December (8pm to 6am)
- The A590 will be closed from Newby Bridge roundabout to Meathop roundabout
Diversion
- from Newby Bridge Roundabout to Windermere
- and then back to the A590 at Brettargh Holt Roundabout
We advise you to plan ahead and allow extra time to complete journeys.
We’re keeping disruption to a minimum by working at night when traffic levels are lower. However, due to the nature of our work it will generate some noise.
We’d like to apologise in advance for any disturbance this may cause you.
Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England website. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.
A56 resurfacing works Haslingden bypass - 3 November 2025 to mid February 2026
Works
We're shortly carrying out maintenance works on the A56 Haslingden Bypass northbound carriageway, between its junction with the A680/B6527 Manchester Road (Bent Gate junction) and the Rising Bridge roundabout near Haslingden.
The works will include:
- carriageway resurfacing
- replacement of road markings, traffic sensors, and kerbs
- vegetation clearance
Closures and Diversion
To ensure the safety of both our workforce and road users, the northbound carriageway will be closed overnight from 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday, during the following periods:
- Monday 3 November to Friday 19 December 2025
- Monday 5 January to Friday 20 February 2026
A clearly signed diversion route will be in place throughout the closures.
Due to the nature of the road comprising two lanes and no hard shoulder, a full closure is necessary to maintain a safe working area and allow works vehicles to pass safely.
We're scheduling these works overnight to minimise disruption by avoiding peak traffic hours. However, some noise is expected, and we apologise in advance for this.
In addition, we're identifying suitable locations for the installation of advance notice signage, so road users can plan alternative routes if necessary.
Furthermore, resurfacing of Rising Bridge Roundabout is also planned for the New Year. This will require additional overnight closures.
Further details will be shared closer to the time.
Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.
A66 Briery to Threlkeld road and bridge repairs - 4 August to 24 October 2025
We’re due to carry out essential repairs on the A66 near Keswick.
Our work involves resurfacing both carriageways of the A66 between Briery and Threlkeld, including Briery junction slip roads. We’ll also be replacing road markings and studs.
To reduce disruption, we’ll be working at night (7pm to 6am) when traffic is lowest.
We’ll work under a 40mph speed limit, temporary traffic lights and convoy system. This means traffic will be escorted through the roadworks, keeping the A66 open during our work.
Please note, resurfacing on the Briery junction slip roads requires overnight closures. Clearly signed diversions will be in place.
Due to the nature of our work, minor delays and noise are expected. We’d like to apologise in advance for any disruption.
Threlkeld Bridge waterproofing and resurfacing
We're about to undertake work on the A66 Threlkeld Bridge near Keswick.
Our work involves waterproofing the bridge deck and resurfacing the road. For safety, temporary two-way traffic lights and a 30mph speed limit will be in place on either side of the bridge throughout our work.
We’ll be working round-the-clock for around a week from 8pm Sunday, 21 September to midday Friday, 26 September. This means we can remove roadworks ahead of the weekend to minimise disruption.
Due to the location of the bridge, we’re unable to provide a suitable local diversion. Our advice to drivers is to plan before travelling and allow additional time to complete journeys.
We’re keeping disruption to a minimum by working 24-hours a day and outside of the school holidays, which is typically peak visitor time.
We’ll be doing all we can to reduce disruption, but this work will create some delays. We’d like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause you.
This scheme is to finish works which started last year but were postponed due to bad weather. Our essential work aims to improve safety and ensure drivers continue to have smooth and reliable journeys on this part of the road network.

Southbound junction 2 to 3 full closure

Please follow the clearly signed diversions where needed. We’re keeping disruption to a minimum by working at night when traffic levels are lower and only on one carriageway at any time.

M60 junction 4 to 5 Palatine bridge safety improvements -28 September 2025 to end of March 2026
Works
We're starting works on Palatine bridge, near junction 5 of the M60, close to Didsbury.
Our work involves installing a new safety barrier on both sides of the bridge which will help improve safety for drivers.
The barrier is designed to last at least 30 years, so it will need less maintenance and mean fewer road closures in the future.
Closures
We're carrying out overnight lane closures between 8pm and 6am Monday to Friday on both carriageways.
Additionally, we’ll close the entry slip at junction 5 overnight from November 2025 until the end of March 2026.
We'll have a clearly signed diversion route in place. This will add about 20 minutes to journeys, so we’re advising drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time to complete trips.
Our work will generate some noise and we’d like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause you.
Please remember that closures can change at short notice. You can check the latest information on our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England. Our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.

Our work involves replacing bridge joints and concrete repairs underneath the structure.
Due to the nature of our work and for safety, there’ll be a traffic restriction on the bridge.

To ensure the traffic restriction is complied with, there’ll be 24-hour two-way traffic lights with single lane running on the A574 Warrington Road.

Closures
To work safely, we'll close one lane (of three) in both directions.

We’ve planned our work to reduce the impact on your journey times. We’ll mainly be working during the day.
We will need to close the bridge later this year. We’ll give you more information when we've confirmed details.
We'll try to minimise noise from our work as much as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience.
