Traffic bulletin: Latest dates for M6 Warrington to Wigan resurfacing

National Highways has released the latest dates for overnight M6 closures as it works to complete the Warrington to Wigan upgrade.

The company is busy adding extra emergency areas, new technology and a lane in each direction to the motorway between junctions 21a and junction 26. It is also resurfacing all four lanes of the upgraded carriageway across long sections of the route between Croft and Orrell interchanges before the work is completed next spring.

Due to the size of the equipment required for the resurfacing there will be a series of overnight carriageway closures over the next few weeks.

The overnight - 9pm to 6am - closures planned over the next few weeks are as follows:

  • M6 northbound junctions 21a to 22 - Friday (10 May), Wednesday 15, Thursday 16, Tuesday 28, Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 May.

  • M6 southbound junctions 22 to 21a - Thursday (May 9) and Monday 13 May.

  • M6 northbound junctions 22 to 23 – Wednesday and Thursday (8 and 9 May) and Tuesday 14 May.

  • M6 southbound junctions 23 to 22 - Friday (10 May) and Thursday 16, Monday 20, Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22, Thursday 23, Tuesday 28, Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 and Friday 31 May.

  • M6 northbound junctions 23 to 26 – Monday 13 May.

  • M6 southbound junctions 26 to 23 – Tuesday and Wednesday (7 and 8 May) and Wednesday 15 May.

The resurfacing is being aligned with other work taking place as part of the scheme, meaning fewer road closures and less disruption for drivers and residents and no requirement for additional overnight closures for resurfacing after the upgraded motorway  has opened.

The precise dates and times of the work may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place overnight when a carriageway is closed.

More information, including details of the diversion routes, is available on the M6 upgrade project webpage.
