Litter-picking volunteers help local nature reserve

A Nottinghamshire nature reserve now has less litter thanks to volunteers from National Highways and its supply chain

Seven members of the Midlands Collaborative Community, a group which shares best practice among National Highways, its delivery partners and suppliers, spent three hours litter picking at Attenborough Nature Reserve following a meeting of its Net Zero working group.

The group was set up to examine ways in which the company responsible for modernising, maintaining and operating England’s motorways and major A roads can achieve Net Zero for its own operations by 2030 and for maintenance and construction by 2040.

National Highways Supplier Relationships Manager Mark Humpage said: “We are committed to improving the environment and examining ways to be more sustainable. Picking litter at the nature reserve was a great way to round off a productive morning and give something back to the local area.

“Attenborough is such a beautiful place. It was great to see it being so well used when we were there, especially by local children on field trips with their schools learning about the environment.”

Erin McDaid of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust which owns and operates the reserve, added:

“Attenborough Nature Reserve is a much-loved natural greenspace but with so many visitors it is inevitable that a small minority cause problems with littering. Litter poses a threat to wildlife and can detract from the enjoyment of the site for other visitors – so we are very grateful to the team from National Highways for their recent efforts.”
