Maintenance work on the A2

We will be installing ice sensors in the westbound carriageway of the A2 at Lydden, Kent, as part of our weather station upgrade work.

For safety, we will need to close the westbound carriageway from Whitfield roundabout to the Lydden Hill exit for one night, 8pm Tuesday 11 March to 6am Wednesday 12 March.

Diversion via A256 north to Manston, then A299 west toward Faversham to Brenley Corner at M2 junction 7.

We're continuing street lighting replacement at the A23 junction with the A2300 into Hickstead.

We'll need overnight (8pm to 6am) traffic management while we work on the northbound entry slip road.

We will be putting in new road signs:

  • along the A23 Brighton Road in Hooley, Surrey
  • on the northbound approach to Hooley from M23 junction 7.

To do this safely, we’ll need some overnight road and lane closures:

Monday 24 February to Friday 28 February 2025, 10pm to 5:30am

The M23 closed northbound between junction 8 (M25) and junction 7 (Hooley).

On Thursday 27 February and Friday 28 February, we'll extend the closure to include the A23 northbound to Dean Lane.  

Monday 3 March to Friday 7 March 2025, 10pm to 5:30am

Lane closures between Harps Oak Lane and Glebe Road.

Monday 10 March to Friday 14 March 2025, 10pm to 5:30am

Lane closures  between M23 junction 7 and Dean Lane and the A23 at Netherne Drive.

Diversions

Week commencing Monday 24 February.

Diversion for motorway traffic

When there are overnight road closures, we'll divert M23 and M25 traffic:

  • towards M25 junction 8 to join the A217 northbound
  • following on to the A2022 eastbound until Foxley lane
  • joining the A23 southbound and back to the A23 Brighton Road roundabout. 

Diversion for non-motorway traffic

The diversion will be:

  • by the A23 southbound to Redhill
  • then the A25 westbound to Reigate
  • then the A217 northbound, rejoining the M25 at junction 8.

We'll maintain access to properties within the closure for residents. We'll escort buses and emergency services when required.

From Monday 3 March onward, we’ll finish our work using overnight lane closures and temporary traffic lights without  diversions. 

We’re doing this work ahead of plans for speed limit reductions through Hooley to improve safety. These include reducing:

  • the current 40mph speed limit through Hooley to 30mph in both directions
  • reducing the speed limit on the northbound approach to Hooley from M23 junction 7.

We need to do drainage, barrier replacement and resurfacing works on the A27 between the Patcham Interchange and A27 Lewes Road. 

For safety, we'll use:

  • day and night time lane closures
  • speed restrictions
  • overnight closures of the A27.

24/7 single lane running, with a reduced lane width and speed restriction of 50mph in both directions.

We have some overnight closures coming up on the A31 eastbound carriageway near Ringwood in Hampshire for safety barrier and bridge repair work.

Closures

For safety, we need to close the A31 eastbound from the Ringwood Interchange to Junction 1 of the M27 between 9pm and 6am on:

  • Monday 14 April and Tuesday 15 April (two nights)
  • Wednesday 23 April, Thursday 24 April and Friday 25 April (three nights)
  • Monday 28 April, Tuesday 29 April and Wednesday 30 April (three nights)
  • Sunday 4 May (one night)

Diversion

There will be a diversion via the A338 and A36.

Work

Bridge repairs are needed on the A406 anticlockwise at Woodford, London, to the M11 northbound link road. 

We'll be working between Monday 28 April to Saturday 3 May and Tuesday 6 May to Saturday 10 May.

Closures and diversions

For safety, the link road will be closed between 10pm and 5.30am Mondays to Thursdays and between 11pm and 6am on Fridays, but will be open during the day.

During the works, A406 anticlockwise traffic wanting to join the M11 northbound at junction 4 will be diverted:

  • to Waterworks Corner
  • turned around on to the A406 clockwise carriageway from here access to the M11 northbound will be available.

Nearby works:

M25 junction 27 to junction 25 overnight closures:

The M25 will be closed anticlockwise between junction 27 and junction 25 for technology testing between 10pm and 5.30am on:

  • Wednesday 30 April,
  • Thursday 1 May,
  • Tuesday 6 May
  • Wednesday 7 May.

Maintenance on the M1

We're renewing more than 500 metres of motorway boundary fence on the M1 northbound near junction 1 in Hendon, starting 7 April 2025 and finishing in \july 2025.

To minimise disruption, our work will take place overnight, from 9pm to 5.30am, Monday to Friday.

For safety, regular overnight lane closures (9pm to 5:30am) will be in place on the M1 northbound carriageway from April to July 2025. One lane will remain open for northbound traffic.

The link road from the A406 North Circular Road westbound to the M1 northbound will be closed overnight, but access to the M1 will still be available via the Staples Corner Roundabout.

We won’t need any traffic restrictions on the adjacent M1 southbound carriageway to complete this work. The overnight lane closures on the northbound carriageway will be removed by 5.30am each morning ahead of busier daytime use.

Maintenance work on the M2

We need to carry out repairs and maintenance to the bridge crossing the M2 at Maidstone Road, Gillingham. 

Works include parapet replacements and installation of safety barriers.

To complete these works safely, we’ll need to close the bridge for five weeks from Monday 20 January to Friday 21 February.

Maidstone Road will be closed from the junction of Wigmore Road, and Deanwood Road to Kemsley Street Road, 24 hours a day.

Diversion routes

A signed diversion in both directions will be in place via Wigmore Road, Hoath Way (A278), Hempstead Road, Hempstead Valley Drive, Hempstead Road, Lidsing Road, Forge Lane, and The Street.

Escorted access within the closure will be maintained for businesses and properties which usually have direct access off Maidstone Road: please go to the closure point (there may be a short wait while we make it safe to pass).

Maintenance work on the M20

Work

We need to renew closed-circuit TV cameras, which are used to assist with traffic management on the M20 motorway, West of Maidstone.

To do this safely, we will need traffic management and diversions in place.

Closures

The M20’s coastbound carriageway between junctions 2 and 4 will be closed from:

  • 10pm 3 February to 5am 7 February (four nights).

Junction 4’s coastbound on-slip road will be closed from:

  •  8pm 10 February to 6am 11 February.

Junction 6 London-bound on-slip will be closed from:

  • 8pm 18 February to 6am 19 February.

Junction 5 London-bound, on-slip road will be closed from:

  • 8pm 19 February to 6am 20 February. 

Lanes will be closed between:

  • junctions 3 and 5 on both carriageways from 8pm 10 February to 6am 28 February.

Diversion routes

During closure of coastbound carriageway, junctions 2 to 4 (10pm 3 February to 5am 7 February): 

  • A20 London Road,
  • A228 Ashton Way.

During closure of junction 4 coastbound on-slip road (8pm 10 February to 6am 11 February):

  • M20 westbound,
  • M26 westbound,
  • M26 J2a Nepicar Interchange,
  • M26 eastbound,
  • M20 coastbound.

During closure of junction 6 London-bound on-slip road (8pm 18 February to 6am 19 February): 

  • Junction 5 Coldharbour Interchange 

During Junction 5’s London-bound, on-slip road closure (8pm 19 February to 6am 20 February): 

  • Junction 5 Coldharbour,
  • M20 eastbound,
  • M20 junction 6 Cobtree Roundabout,
  • A229 Chatham Road,
  • M20 junction 6 Running Horse Roundabout,
  • M20 westbound.

Essential resurfacing starts soon on the M25 anticlockwise carriageway at junction 2, Darenth Interchange in Kent.

For safety, the M25 will be closed anticlockwise, between the slip roads at junction 2:

  • 10pm Saturday 26 April until 7am Sunday 27 April 2025
  • 10pm Saturday 10 May until 7am Sunday 11 May 2025
  • 9pm Saturday 17 May until 9am Sunday 18 May 2025

Diversion 

A short diversion will be in place via the junction 2 anticlockwise exit slip road, through the Darenth Interchange roundabout, and back onto the M25, using the junction 2 anticlockwise entry slip road.

Maintenance work on the M271

We need to resurface three sections of concrete carriageway on the M271 near Southampton.

For safety, we'll need to close the M271 southbound from the M27 junction 3 roundabout to the M271 junction 1, 8pm Saturday 31 May to 6am Monday 2 June.

Please allow extra travel time as the diversion route is likely to be busy.

From the M27 junction 3 roundabout:

  • head north via M271
  • travel northbound to Romsey Road roundabout
  • take the A3057 Romsey Road to Lordshill roundabout
  • then Brownhill Way to M271 junction 1

Maintenance work on the M4

We are carrying out essential bridge repairs to junction 12 of the M4 Theale Interchange.

Work includes replacing the expansion joints, waterproofing, and resurfacing to maintain the structural integrity to both bridges.

The hard shoulder of the M4 westbound carriageway under the bridge will be closed 24/7 for the duration of works.

Our works are nearing completion. We've been delayed due to cold weather and need one further closure to finish our works.

Wednesday 16 April overnight (9pm to 6am)

Traffic will be diverted via, A4155 Bath Road, A4155 Castle Hill, A33, A339 Ringway North, A340 Aldermaston Road, Main Road, Tadley Hill, A340 Aldermaston Road, A340 Paices Hill, A340 Basingstoke Road, A4 Bath Road to Theale Interchange junction 12 of the M4.

Traffic wishing to the join the M4 when the on slips are closed, will follow the diversions to it reaches junction 11 of the M4.

We’re resurfacing the westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 14-15, Baydon to Foxhill.

For safety, there will be overnight closures on the westbound carriageway and lane closures, 9pm to 6am. There will also be daytime lane closures to allow materials to set. 

The following closure information is scheduled to take place:

  • Monday 24 March for four nights full closure westbound junction 14-15 (no access to and from services)
  • Tuesday 25 March for three days daytime lane one closure (access to and from Membury services will be maintained) 6am – 9pm
  • Monday 31 March full closure westbound junction 14-15 (no access to and from services)
  • Thursday 3 April and Friday 4 April full closure westbound junction 14-15 (no access to and from services)
  • Tuesday 8 April full closure westbound junction 14-15 (no access to and from services)
Diversions

HGV Route:

  • exit at M4 J14,
  • continue on A338 to Bath Road
  • turn right onto A4 and head westbound along Strongrove Hill,
  • turn right onto the A346 and head northbound
  • rejoin M4 at J15
