Works

We’re installing new maintenance access points in the A1089 central reservation barrier which will be delivered in two phases.

We carry out regular maintenance to keep the A1089 in a safe and reliable condition. However, when the road is fully closed between the Port of Tilbury and Marshfoot Interchange, there’s no suitable alternative route for all vehicles. This can delay important planned works, which keeps the road safe and reliable, and lead to emergency repairs at short notice.

The new access points will allow traffic to be diverted onto the opposite carriageway and escorted when the A1089 is closed northbound or southbound for planned maintenance. The work will reduce long-term disruption from future maintenance, improve roadworker safety and ensure continued A1089 access during junction-to-junction closures.

Closures and Diversions

We’ll carry out overnight closures to complete the work safely.

Our first phase of work, between the Asda Roundabout and Port of Tilbury entrance, is due to take place between Monday 13 October and Saturday 22 November 2025.

We’ll close the road between 9pm and 4am during the week while traffic volumes are at their lowest.

Our diversions will use Marshfoot Road, Chadwell Hill, and Fort Road. Narrow roads such as Gun Hill, Turnpike Lane and Blue Anchor Lane, will become a one-way system overnight, for safety, and to maintain vehicle flow.

Speed limits will be lowered through nearby residential areas each night for safety until the A1089 is reopened each morning.

Monday 13 October to Friday 7 November (9pm to 4am on weeknights)

We’ll close the A1089 northbound between the Port of Tilbury entrance and Asda Roundabout.

You’ll be diverted by:

  • Windrush Way eastbound
  • Gun Hill, Turnpike Lane northbound
  • Linford Road westbound
  • Chadwell Hill southbound
  • Marshfoot Road westbound to the A126 / A1089 Marshfoot Interchange

A temporary one-way system will operate overnight in a clockwise direction on the following roads:

  • Gun Hill
  • Turnpike Lane
  • Muckingford Road
  • Blue Anchor Lane
  • Church Road
  • Coopers Shaw Road.

Traffic from Rectory Road will need to turn right onto Turnpike Lane or Church Road

Monday 10 November to Friday 14 November (9pm to 4am on weeknights)

We’ll close the A1089 southbound between the Asda Roundabout and Port of Tilbury entrance.

You’ll be diverted by:

  • The A1089 / A126 Marshfoot Interchange
  • Marshfoot Road eastbound
  • Chadwell Hill northbound
  • Linford Road eastbound
  • Turnpike Lane, Gun Hill southbound
  • Windrush Way westbound

A temporary one-way system will operate overnight in a counter clockwise direction on the following roads:

  • Coopers Shaw Road
  • Church Road
  • Blue Anchor Lane
  • Muckingford Road
  • Turnpike Lane
  • Gun Hill

Traffic from Rectory Road will need to turn left onto Gun Hill or Blue Anchor Lane

Monday 17 November to Friday 21 November (9pm to 4am on weeknights)

We’ll close the A1089 between the Asda Roundabout and A13.

Further details will be shared shortly.

Our second phase of work, between the Asda Roundabout and A13, will take place in 2026. Please check back for updates.
