    Narrow lanes and closures

Narrow lane installation and upcoming road closure

We're upgrading the A66 between M6 junction 40 and Temple Sowerby.

Average speed cameras and a 40mph speed limit are already in place. CCTV covers the route, and we offer free vehicle recovery in our work areas.

Due to the nature of the large-scale construction activities of upgrading the A66, narrow lanes need to be installed to facilitate the forthcoming works happening around Center Parcs (500m west of Center Parcs to Temple Sowerby bypass).

Wide load ban – 20 July 2026 to winter 2030/31

From 20 July, vehicles wider than 2.9m cannot use the A66 between M6 junction 40 and Temple Sowerby.

Alternative routes for wide loads will be via either the A69 or the M62 depending on the starting location of the wide load as shown on the map below.

A66 narrow lanes diversion route map

Over 100 signs will direct wide loads at ports, airports and key junctions across the north of England. If you're travelling from the south, look out for mobile message boards and gantry signs. Holding areas are in place to catch and redirect any wide loads that miss the signage.
