Step 3: Detailed design, grid connection and pre-construction
Grid connection application process
Some sites may require a grid upgrade to deliver EV charging. You can identify your local DNO via the Energy Networks Association (ENA) website. National Grid outlines the detailed process for applying for a grid connection. The grid connection process follows a clear sequence from early enquiry to final switch‑on. This is a summary of what they advise:
Pre-application enquiry
Early discussion with the grid operator to understand requirements and feasibility.
Formal application
Submit technical details, expected demand, and pay any application fees.
Review and assessment
The grid operator carries out studies to check grid capacity and safety impacts.
Connection offer
You receive terms, costs, required upgrades, and delivery timescales.
Contract signing
Accept the offer and formalise responsibilities in a connection agreement.
When going through the application process, remember to engage your DNO early:
- Have all your documents ready (including a site location plan, a site layout plan and an Energy Networks Association (ENA) EV application form)
- Plan your upgrade costs
