Temporary speed limit - new date for repair

The speed limit through the northbound side of the tunnel will remain in place now until mid-December. We will be doing the necessary repairs to resolve the fault and lift the temporary speed limit during night time closures (9pm-5am) of the tunnel on 16, 17, 18 and 19 December. The normal diversion route will be in place via A325 and A31 as usual.

November’s monthly routine maintenance will still be carried out during the week commencing 18 November. The tunnel will not be closed for this but will operate in contraflow during this work.

Weeknight closures for lighting upgrades - November 2023 - March 2024

We’re working to replace some of the lighting in both bores of the Hindhead Tunnel to improve safety and visibility. Work is due to start on weeknights from Wednesday 15 November till March 2024. We’ll only need to close one entrance to the tunnel at a time and use a contraflow system, so you’ll still be able to travel through. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during our safety upgrades.

Please remember that closure details can change at short notice.  For the most up-to-date information, please visit our daily closures page.

Overview

We carry out regular maintenance of the tunnel to keep it safe and working properly. When we do maintenance we try to avoid fully closing the tunnel and use a contraflow system instead.

The Hindhead Tunnel contains a range of technology. One of the latest additions are the ‘Swift Gates’ which were added in 2022.
