Latest updates

  • Upcoming road closures in December 2023

We’ll be carrying out essential maintenance work on the M1 between junction 10 Luton airport (south) and 13 Bedford/Milton Keynes South.

    During our work we will:

    • carry out survey work
    • vegetation clearance
    • install CCTV

Safety is our number one priority and for this reason, work of this type must be carried out using a full carriageway closure. We'll need to fully close the road overnight from 10pm to 5am. We will need to close the northbound direction for the first few nights, and then the southbound.

We’ll do our utmost to complete the work as quickly as possible and keep disruption and noise to a minimum. However, we apologise that some activity may be noisy, for example, reversing bleepers must be operational on our vehicles for health and safety reasons.

Project information

Overview

Safety is our top priority. Upgrading these barriers will improve journeys and significantly reduce the risk of vehicles crossing over from one carriageway to another, improving safety and reducing the duration of incident-related congestion.

We are continuing to deliver safety enhancements to the M1 motorway, which is amongst the busiest in the country and relied on by hundreds of thousands of people every day.

Concrete barriers are even stronger than metal ones and significantly reduce the risk of vehicles crossing over from one carriageway to another, improving safety and reducing the duration of incident-related congestion.

They are also virtually maintenance free and will last twice as long as normal metal barriers, with far less need forclosures for routine repairs .

As well as  the barrier upgrade, CCTV along the motorway will be upgraded and improved signage for each of the section’s 30 emergency areas will be installed.
