M6 - Greater Manchester - Road closed - J23 to J24

The M6 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions between J23 (Newton Le Willows) and J24 (Ashton In Makerfield) due to a collision resulting in a vehicle fire.

Emergency services including North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management. 

Diversion Routes

Road users heading northbound are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol on road signs:

• Leave the M6 at J23 and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A580 heading west. 
• Follow the A580 to the A580/A58 junction and turn right onto the A58 eastbound. 
• Continue on the A58 eastbound back to the M6 J24 and rejoin the M6 northbound at J24 to continue your journey. 

Road users heading southbound are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs:

• Leave the M6 at J24 and turn right onto the A58 heading west. 
• Follow the A58 to the A58/A580 junction and turn left onto the A580 heading east. 
• Continue on the A580 eastbound back to the M6 J23 and at the roundabout take the 3rd exit to rejoin the M6 southbound to continue your journey.
