Maintenance work on the M25

You can find more details about the maintenance schemes taking place on the M25 below:

We recently switched off some sections of life-expired street lighting around the M25 network as part of our work towards achieving National Highways’ net zero targets.

This includes some sections of street lighting in the following areas:

  • 10.4 miles between junctions 6 and 9
  • 2 miles between junction 21a to 23
  • 4 miles between junction 29 to 30

Switching off these lights is estimated to save around 676,800 kgCO2e; the equivalent of taking over 400 cars off the road a year or the energy use of 85.3 homes over one year. Some areas, such as around junctions and slip roads, will remain lit and continue to be maintained. This will allow motorists to adjust between the different lighting levels on the M25 main carriageway and local road networks.

We carried out a thorough safety review prior to switching off the lighting in these sections. The lighting columns will remain in place for up to two years while we undertake further post switch-off safety reviews and signs are currently in place to indicate to motorists where sections of lighting have been switched off.

Our evidence on the M25 network suggests that turning off lighting reduces incidents. This not only supports the government's Net Zero strategy, but also benefits the environment, helping wildlife and reducing light pollution.

You can find more information about our net zero highways plan on our dedicated webpage.

Maintenance work on the M27

You can find more details about the maintenance schemes taking place on the M27 below:

These closures are managed by Hampshire County Council but will affect National Highways' roads network.

Two overnight road closures are required in early August by Hampshire County Council’s contractor Volker Fitzpatrick to ensure the safe movement of equipment and materials into the area to enable advance works activities. In addition, from mid-August, a section of the A32 will reduce from two lanes to one lane in each direction. The work supports the Welborne Garden Village development near Fareham.

Road closures

Friday 2 August 2024 between 9pm and 5.30am (a single night closure)

M27 Junction 10 westbound slip road closure and associated A32 Northbound Lane 1 closure (from M27 exit slip to Dean Farm entrance).

The A32 will remain open in both directions and a diversion route will be in place for the M27 slip road closure.

The closure is taking place to allow for the safe delivery of large equipment and materials.

Wednesday 14 August 2024 between 9pm and 5.30am (a single night closure)

M27 Junction 10 westbound slip road closure and A32 northbound full closure (from North Hill Roundabout to Knowle Roundabout),

A32 southbound will remain open.

A diversion route will be in place for the M27 slip road and the A32 northbound closures.

Escorted access will be provided for directly impacted residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles.

The closure is taking place to enable the installation of a full-time lane one closure on the A32 northbound. This will be in operation from 06:00am on 15 August 2024 to allow for a temporary access to be constructed off the A32.

For the lane closure to operate safely, the existing central refuge crossings at Dean Farm and Pook Lane need to be closed. Road users wanting to turn across the A32 will need to travel north on the A32 to Knowle roundabout and then head back south.

For more information about the diversion routes and scheme, visit the Hampshire County Council’s website.
