Yorkshire and North East - Maintenance schemes

We're improving safety barriers in the central reservation and alongside the northbound carriageway. We will also be upgrading lighting in the area to LED, as well as replacing missing or damaged marker posts.

We'll also be removing the disused bus stop structure and layby on the A1 northbound near Skellow footbridge. 

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday 4 November and is expected to be complete in March 2025. 

We will need to put some full and lane closures in place in both directions between the A1 (M) junctions 38 (A638 Redhouse) and A1 junction 39 (A639 Barnsdale Bar).

This will be carried out in phases and both carriageways will not be closed at the same time. To minimise disruption, we will carry out most of this work overnight. 

To allow two lanes to remain open in both directions during the day, we will be implementing narrow lanes, and to keep drivers safe while the barrier is being replaced, there will be a 40mph speed limit in place. 

Closures

Some further overnight full closures (from 8pm until 6am the following morning) are planned for the New Year on this section of the A1 to enable the installation of narrow lanes. They are as follows:

• 11 and 12 January: southbound (Saturday and Sunday)
• 13 and 14 January: northbound
• 25 - 27 February: southbound

Further full overnight closures will be in place on the A1, every weeknight, Monday – Friday, on these dates:

• 27 February – 19 March 2025: northbound
• 19 March – 1 April 2025: southbound

The route will remain open on Saturday and Sunday nights during these periods. 

Good progress continues to be made, and we remain on track to have this completed in March 2025.

• Fully signed diversions will be in place. Traffic will be diverted northbound from junction 38,
• via the A638 and the A6201 Wrangbrook Lane,
• to rejoin the A1 at Barnsdale Bar.
• This route will be followed in reverse for the southbound closures.

We’re making additional safety improvements to the crossing point near Haggerston Castle Holiday Park bus stop.  

We will start work on 16 September. We expect the work to last for four weeks.

We'll put traffic lights on the northbound carriageway during daytime hours 9am - 3pm.

We have planned closures for:

Friday 27 September 8pm to Monday 30 September 6am.

Friday 4 October 8pm to Monday 7 October 6am.

Diversions

We are replacing the safety barrier and upgrading the lighting between South Cave and North Ferriby. We are also resurfacing the footbridge at Elloughton.

Closures

To work safely, we'll use weeknight closures on east and westbound carriageways (between 8pm and 6am).

To start, we'll be working from July to August 2024, though we'll continue until Spring 2025.

We'll alternate east and westbound closures. To minimise disruption, we won't fully close  the road in both directions at the same time.

During July, we'll use a 40mph speed limit on this section of the road, with average speed cameras.

We need to upgrade the drainage on the A64 near Crambeck to increase the drainage capacity. This is to prevent standing water and improve safety. 

To do this safely, we will need to install temporary traffic lights to control traffic on the A64 and junctions at Castle Howard Station Road and Greets House Road.

Work will start on 15 November and will take place throughout the weekend until the morning of 18 November, weather permitting.

Some of this work will be unavoidably noisy. We will do everything we can to minimise disruption but would like to apologise in advance for any disturbance caused by this much needed work.

Closure

We need to resurface the A64 between Ganton and Staxton. To do this safely, we need to close the A64 overnight between 8pm and 6am.

Work will start on 21 October and will finish on 30 October, weather permitting. We will not be working at the weekend. 

We are aware that residents in Staxton will need to retain access to A64 and have contacted them directly to explain how this will happen. For all others, local diversion routes will be clearly signed.

Diversion routes will be clearly signed. Please note, there are some day time patching works taking place on the A170 this week (week commencing 21 October); however, these will not affect the diversion route and the A170 will remain open during the overnight works on the A64.

Diversions

Eastbound traffic will be diverted via the A64 westbound and via the A170, B1261 Seamer Road onto Main Street through Seamer, to rejoin the A64 north of Staxton.

Westbound traffic will follow this route in reverse.

From Monday 11 November, we will begin resurfacing the A69 in Northumberland, over a 2km stretch of road between Haltwhistle and Haydon Bridge.

This will be carried out overnight, when traffic levels are lightest, over a period of three weeks.

Closures

To keep drivers and the workforce safe, the resurfacing will take place under overnight lane closures.

• These will run between 7pm and 7am, Monday to Friday.

The road will remain open on Saturday and Sunday nights. There will be speed restrictions of 40 and 10mph during the lane closures as required. 

This work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in poor conditions.

We’re continuing to carry out specialist repairs and maintenance on the concrete surface of the A180 in both directions between the junctions with the A15 and A160. This aims to extend the life expectancy of the A180 by around five years through targeted pavement repairs. 

To work safely, we'll need a mixture of overnight and daytime westbound and eastbound closures.

The works are currently progressing well, with around 90% of the work completed on the westbound carriageway.

To allow us to complete this work safely, we need to have westbound and eastbound road closures, which are a mixture of full closures at night carried out between 8pm and 6am, and single lane closures during the daytime to allow the concrete to cure.

We had planned to have the works completed by 19 December 2024. Unfortunately, due to the recent cold weather and the need for additional work to be carried out in this section, we now expect to be working until 17 January 2025. 

Closures are now scheduled as follows:

• Westbound closure – 11 October to 13 December 2024
• Eastbound closure – 16 December until 20 December 2024, then 2 January until 17 January 2025

We also need a 24/7 lane 1 closure to allow the concrete time to cure.

We plan to remove all traffic management over the Christmas embargo period, from 6am on 20 December. We'll then reinstate all traffic management on 2 January, with a lane 1 closure on the eastbound carriageway.

All work is subject to weather conditions.

Please note, there is a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes for vehicles travelling through Ulceby and other villages in the Ferry Ward area, except for loading/ unloading in the area.

Diversions

During night-time closures, road users travelling on the A180 between the A15 and A160 junctions will need to use the signed diversion routes. Westbound

While the A180 is closed westbound, traffic will be diverted along the A180 from Brocklesby, then onto the A1173, and the A18, to join the M180 at junction 5.

During the closure of the A180 eastbound carriageway between M180 junction 5 and Brocklesby Interchange, affected traffic will be diverted off the M180 junction 5 onto the A18 heading south east, following the A18 until reaching the staggered junction with the A1173. Turn left onto the A1173 and continue on this route before joining the A180 at the Stallingborough interchange.

During the closure of the A180 eastbound carriageway between Brocklesby Interchange and the junction of A180 and A1173, affected traffic will be diverted as follows:

From Brocklesby interchange: head north along the A160. At Habrough roundabout, take the third exit to continue along the A160 and, at Manby roundabout, take the third exit onto the A1173. Continue along the A1173 to rejoin the A180 at the Stallingborough interchange

We're resurfacing the east and westbound A696, including the roundabouts at Kenton Bar and Prestwick.

We began work on Monday 19 August and expect to finish in November, weather permitting.

For safety reasons, we'll work overnight (8pm to 6am) Sunday to Friday. During these hours, there will be a 50mph speed limit.

We've developed this scheme in close collaboration with Newcastle International Airport and Newcastle City Counci.

We need to replace the wire rope central barrier with a concrete one, to improve safety for drivers.

Concrete barriers are even stronger than metal ones. They significantly reduce the risk of vehicles crossing over from one carriageway to another

The scheme has been split into 2 sections and will take around 16 months to complete.

The first section, between junctions 46 and 47 will start in March and is expected to last around 7 months.

The second section, between junctions 43 and 45, which also includes upgrading the LED lighting, will start in August and is expected to take 9 months.

Traffic management

To work safely we need to close 1 lane on the north and southbound carriageways.

We'll also reduce the speed limit to 50mph as we remove sections of the barrier.

Traffic management will start between junctions 46 and 47 with the first phase.

As work continues, we'll extend the traffic management to include junctions 43 to 45.

This allows us to reduce the overall duration of the work and maintain safety.

Please allow more time for your journey. We expect significant delays during the evening peak as people leave the Leeds area.

We're replacing the safety barriers (parapets) on 4 bridges at junction 35 of the M62 where it meets the M18.

Lane closures

We’re carrying out these improvements overnight where traffic levels are lightest, to minimise disruption. However, those planning to travel on the M62 during these times are advised to allow plenty of extra time for their journeys.

We're replacing the parapet on the M62 bridge between junctions 29 and 30. 

We’ll start on the westbound carriageway before switching to the eastbound mid-November. We'll work during the day.

We'll need one overnight full closure westbound (8pm to 6am) to allow us to set up narrow lanes.

We'll then close lane one and all emergency areas for the duration of the work.

A 50mph speed limit will also be in place.

We'll need one overnight full closure eastbound (8pm to 6am) to allow us to set up narrow lanes.

We'll then close lane one and all emergency areas for the duration of the work.

• all traffic management
• temporary speed restrictions.

We’re replacing the parapet at Parkfields Bridge at junction 32 of the M62 westbound (Glasshoughton). 

From Monday 4 November, we will begin working overnight at this bridge for around six weeks.

Closure

To ensure we are able to carry the work out safely, lanes 1 and 2 of the westbound carriageway will be closed on weeknights from junction 32A (A1(M)) to just past junction 32.

• The lane closures will be in place every night, Monday – Friday, between 8pm and 6am.
• However, between 2 and 6 December, closures will be between 9pm and 6am.
