Traffic bulletin: Weekend resurfacing works for M62 Manchester to Warrington route

Drivers planning to use the M62 between Manchester and Warrington over the next two weekends are being advised of important repair work between junction 12 at Eccles interchange with the M60 and junction 11 at Birchwood.

National Highways is carrying out targeted resurfacing along the westbound carriageway from Friday night until Sunday morning this weekend (Friday 21 to Sunday 23 February) and next weekend (Friday 28 February to Sunday 2 March).

In detail, the work will be taking place with full overnight carriageway or daytime lane closures at the following times:

•    Full overnight westbound carriageway closure from junction 12 to junction 11 between 9pm on Friday night (21 February) and 6am on Saturday (22 February) and again from 9pm on Friday 28 February to 6am on Saturday 1 March;

•    Two of the four westbound lanes closed between junction 12 and junction 11 from 6am to 11.30pm on Saturday (22 February) and from 6am to 10.30pm on Saturday 1 March;

•    Full overnight westbound carriageway closure from junction 12 to junction 11 between 11.30pm on Saturday night (22 February) and 6am on Sunday morning (23 February) and again from 10.30pm on Saturday 1 March and 6am on Sunday 2 March.

When the motorway is closed overnight on the Friday and Saturday nights a diversion will operate using the anti-clockwise M60, westbound M56 and northbound M6 with drivers rejoining the M62 at junction 10 at Croft interchange.

No work will be taking place along the eastbound carriageway which will remain fully-open throughout each weekend.

National Highways has chosen these weekends to do the work as it is relatively quiet events-wise in Manchester but it has adjusted the timings of both Saturday night closures of the westbound carriageway to help fans leaving concerts and football in the city centre.

Football fans heading to Liverpool on Saturday for the Everton v Manchester United match at Goodison Park (12.30pm kick-off) are being advised to consider using the M56 and M6 route – joining the westbound M62 at junction 10 at Croft interchange - should they wish to avoid the daytime lane closures.

To take advantage of the carriageway and lanes closures, other National Highways staff will be undertaking some general maintenance such as gulley cleaning during the two weekends.

Drivers heading out on journeys can check traffic conditions before setting out on journeys. Live traffic information is always available at www.trafficengland.com or from National Highways’ 24-7 customer contact centre at 0300 123 5000. Updates will also be posted to @HighwaysNWest – National Highways’ regional feed on X.

More information on the project is available on a dedicated webpage.
