The A1 in Cambridgeshire is closed northbound between J17 of the A1(M) (near Peterborough A1139) and the  A47 (near Wansford) following a serious collision involving two HGV's that occurred at 03:00.

The closure remains in place to facilitate vehicle recovery.

The southbound carriageway has since been reopened with lane 2 of (2) remaining closed for emergency services to work safely at the scene.

Traffic caught within the closure has now been released.

Both HGVs involved caught fire following the collision and has caused substantial road surface damage, which will need to be resurfaced.

Plans are in place to mobilise resurfacing crew and materials to attend once recovery and collision investigation is complete. Initial scene clearance and recovery is complex and will be protracted.

The northbound carriageway is not expected to re-open until later this evening.
