Abnormal loads and the ESDAL system

How to notify police, highway and structures authorities of abnormal load movements online

Abnormal loads

An abnormal load is a vehicle that has any of the following:

  • a weight of more than 44,000kg
  • an axle load of more than 10,000kg for a single non-driving axle and 11,500kg for a single driving axle
  • a width of more than 2.9 metres
  • a rigid length of more than 18.65 metres

Other measurements may apply if you’re transporting a load abroad.

If you’re responsible for transporting an abnormal load, you need to follow regulations for notifying highway, police and bridge authorities.

Electronic Service Delivery for Abnormal Loads (ESDAL)

The ESDAL system makes this process easier for hauliers, structure owners, highway authorities and the police.

If you are a Haulier , you can use ESDAL to:

  • plan your route and check its suitability for your load
  • get full details of all the organisations and authorities you need to notify before you travel
  • notify the police, highways and bridge authorities of your abnormal indivisible load (AIL) movements around the road network
  • submit your notifications
  • get advance notice of any possible route problems
  • save vehicle details and routes for future use

If you work for a police, road or bridge authority, you can use ESDAL to:

  • manage haulier's abnormal load notifications
  • check the suitability of the haulier's route

You only need a PC with internet access to use ESDAL. You don't need any special software.

Register with ESDAL

You need to complete an online registration form for each person in your business who will use the system.

The ESDAL system is password protected - only you can see your own company’s information.

Your route information will only be passed to the relevant authorities.
