  M6 junction 19 project is now complete

  The M6 junction 19 Improvement scheme is now complete. There are no more planned closures of the roundabout for this project.

  Please note that we're currently resurfacing the M6 carriageway at this location. There will be some lane closures on the M6 in both directions. This is part of our standard programme of work to maintain the network in the region.

  Roundabout closed overnight this weekend

  We need to close the M6 junction 19 roundabout for two nights this weekend to complete some finishing works.

  The closures will be in place between:

  • 9pm Saturday 2 April to 6am Sunday 3 April
  • 9pm Sunday 3 April to 6am Monday 4 April

  There will be no access to, from or across the M6 motorway at junction 19 during these times.

  Motorway traffic will continue to run from junction 18 to 20, in both directions. The M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will also be closed. The diversion will be to junction 10 and back.

  During the day, the roundabout will remain open for traffic.

  Roundabout to close overnight during two weekends

  We need to close the M6 junction 19 roundabout overnight, during two weekends in March. The roundabout opened to traffic in November 2021. Since then, we've been monitoring traffic flow. We are now returning to complete finishing work and make some additional improvements. 

  During the closures, there will be no access to, from or across the M6 motorway at junction 19. Motorway traffic will continue to run from junction 18 to 20, northbound and southbound. M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will also be closed with a diversion to junction 10 and back. The closures will be in place between:

  • 9pm Saturday 12 – 6am Sunday 13
  • 9pm Sunday 13 – 6am Monday 14

  And

  • 9pm Saturday 19 – 6am Sunday 20
  • 9pm Sunday 20 – 6am Monday 21

  The roundabout will remain open for traffic during the day.

  Project complete – new link roads open for traffic

  The M6 junction 19 Improvement scheme is now complete. The two new link roads across the roundabout were opened for traffic mid-November. A few days later, we also switched on the new traffic signals in Tabley. The new designated crossing point is now open for pedestrians and cyclists to use.

  Since the link roads opened, we’ve been removing temporary traffic signals. This work has been done during overnight closures of the roundabout. Our last overnight closure is planned for Friday 3 December. After this date, no further closures of the roundabout are planned.

  Project opening - November 2021

  We've nearly completed the M6 junction 19 Improvement scheme. The two new link roads joining the M6 northbound with the A556 towards Manchester and the M6 southbound with the A556 towards Northwich will be open for traffic from 7am on Saturday 20 November.

  A few days later, on Tuesday 23 November, the new traffic signals on the A556 in Tabley will be switched on and the designated crossing point opened for pedestrians and cyclists.

  The new intelligent traffic light system that we’ve installed on the roundabout is designed to learn from and adapt to the flow of traffic. It may take a few days for the new system to reach its optimum configuration so please bear with us as some queues are likely during this time.

  Full overnight closures of M6 junction19 roundabout & M56 junction 7 west exit until Friday 3 December

  Once the new traffic signals are switched on, we’ll need to remove the temporary lights. This is likely to take around two weeks and will require further overnight closures of the roundabout, Monday to Friday.

  During this time, all approaches to the roundabout will be closed. There will be no access to, from or across the M6 motorway at junction 19. Motorway traffic will continue to run from junction 18 to 20, northbound and southbound.

  A556 will be closed in Tabley, northbound from A5033 junction and southbound from the M6J19 roundabout.

  A556 will be closed southbound from Bucklow Hill to the junction 19 roundabout.

  M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will also be closed with a diversion to junction 10 and back.

  PLEASE NOTE: There is a planned embargo from Monday 29 November to Thursday 2 December due to Black Friday. There will be no motorway closures during this time.

  Update on work - October 2021

  We’re now in the final stages of this project. The new link roads and roundabout have been resurfaced and the kerbing is almost complete. We continue to work overnight, to minimise disruption to road users. The roundabout will be fully closed, every Monday to Friday from 9pm to 6am until the end of the project. We also close the M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road at the same time.

  Once the bridge is open, we’ll need to close the roundabout overnight for two further weeks. This is so that we can remove temporary street lighting. Again, these closures will be from 9pm to 6am, Monday to Friday only.

  M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road closures

  Week commencing 27 September

  We will not be able to close the M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road overnight during week commencing 27 September. This is due to a closure of the M56 junction 6 westbound exit as part of the M56 junction 6 to 8 motorway upgrade project.

  We aim to close the M56 junction 7 exit when possible, during planned closures of the A556. This is to ensure that motorway traffic (including heavy goods vehicles travelling south from Manchester) stay on the motorway, instead of filtering onto local roads.

  We understand the impact that not closing the M56 junction 7 exit may have on the amount of traffic using the A50, A5034 and B5569. Feedback from residents was taken into consideration during our planning meeting. As a result, the length of time the exit will remain open was reduced from two weeks to just one. We apologise in advance for any disruption you experience.

  Please note: There will be no closures on Wednesday 29 September due to a football match taking place.

  POSTPONED: Planned full weekend closure of M6 J19 roundabout and M56 J7 west exit slip

  The full roundabout closure that we had planned for Friday 17 to Monday 20 September has been postponed.

  There’s been a delay in the road surface material being delivered to site. This is linked to Covid-19 and a nationwide backlog of deliveries.

  We had planned to close the junction from 9pm, Friday 17 September to 6am, Monday 20 September. This was so that we could resurface the carriageway. We’re now planning a shorter closure of the roundabout from 9pm, Saturday 25 September to 6am, Monday 27 September. This closure is to be confirmed.

  Upcoming closures, including a full weekend closure

  November completion date and upcoming closures

  The new link bridge, which we’re building as part of the M6 junction 19 improvement scheme, is expected to be open for traffic in November 2021.

  To minimise the impact of our work on customers, we plan to carry out most of work during total closures overnight. A single full weekend closure is also needed in September to complete the final surfacing work. More details below.

  Full overnight closures of junction 19 roundabout and M56 junction 7 west exit 

  • Now until November 2021, Monday to Friday, 9pm – 6am

  There will be total closures of the M6 junction 19 roundabout between 9pm and 6am every Monday to Friday until completion of the project in November. All approaches to the roundabout will be closed. There will be no access to, from or across the M6 motorway at junction 19. Motorway traffic will continue to run from junction 18 to 20, in both directions.

  A556 will be closed in Tabley, northbound from A5033 junction and southbound from the M6 junction 19 roundabout.

  A556 will be closed southbound from Bucklow Hill to the junction 19 roundabout.

  M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will also be closed with a diversion to junction 10 and back.

  No full closures are planned August Bank Holiday (27, 28, 29, 30 August)

  Full weekend closure of junction 19 roundabout and M56 junction 7 west exit

  • From 9pm Friday 17 to 6am Monday 20 September

  There will be a total closure of the M6 junction 19 roundabout for a whole weekend to finish resurfacing the roundabout. All approaches to the roundabout will be closed. There will be no access to, from or across the M6 motorway at junction 19. Motorway traffic will continue to run from junction 18 to 20, in both directions.

  A556 will be closed in Tabley, northbound from A5033 junction and southbound from the M6 junction 19 roundabout.

  A556 will be closed southbound from Bucklow Hill to the junction 19 roundabout.

  M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will also be closed with a diversion to junction 10 and back.

  Upcoming closures and change of scheme completion date

  We’ve made good progress in what has been an extremely challenging year. However, our schedule has regrettably been affected by the industry-wide product shortages and long lead times brought about by Covid-19 restrictions and the isolation of supply chain workers.

  The new link bridge, which we’re building as part of the M6 junction 19 Improvement scheme is expected to be open for traffic in November 2021. This is later than the original summer opening date, which we previously communicated.

  To minimise the impact on our customers, we plan to carry out all remaining work during overnight closures. There will be closures of the M6 motorway or junction 19 roundabout between 9pm and 6am, every Monday to Friday until completion of the project in November. More details below.

  Full overnight closures of J19 roundabout & M56 J7 west exit

  • Monday 2 August – Friday 6 August (9pm-6am)
  • Monday 23 August to Wednesday 3 November (9pm-6am, Monday to Friday only)

  All approaches to the roundabout will be closed. There will be no access to, from or across the M6 motorway at junction 19. Motorway traffic will continue to run from junction 18 to 20, northbound and southbound.

  A556 will be closed in Tabley, northbound from A5033 junction and southbound from the M6J19 roundabout.

  A556 will be closed southbound from Bucklow Hill to the junction 19 roundabout.

  M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will also be closed with a diversion to junction 10 and back.

  No full closures planned August Bank Holiday (27, 28, 29, 30 August)

  Full overnight closures of M6 motorway

  • Monday 9 August – Friday 13 August (9pm-6am) 
  • Monday 16 August – Friday 20 August (9pm-6am)

  The M6 motorway will be closed northbound and southbound between the exit and entry slip roads. A short up-and-over diversion route will be in place. Expect delays.

  The A556 northbound to Manchester and southbound onto the M6 will remain open. M56 J7 west exit will also remain open during these closures.

  A556 will be closed in Tabley in both directions between the M6J19 roundabout and the junction with the A5033.

  Removing our roadworks from the M6 motorway

  At the end of August, we’ll be removing all our roadworks from this section of the M6 motorway. From 6am on Monday 23 August:

  • the 50mph speed restriction will be removed
  • all lanes will be back to normal width
  • the hard shoulder will be re-instated

  To make these changes, there will be three nights of full and partial closures:

  Friday 20 August – 9pm to 6am

  • M6 southbound, full closure between J20 and J19
  • M6 northbound closed between J19 exit and entry slip road. Up-and-over diversion in place

  Saturday 21 August – 9pm to 6am

  • M6 northbound closed between J19 exit and entry slip road. Up-and-over diversion in place

  Sunday 22 August – 9pm to 6am

  • M6 southbound, full closure between J20 and J19
  • M6 northbound closed between J19 exit and entry slip road. Up-and-over diversion in place

  Please note that all of the above listed closures may change due to unforeseen circumstances.

  Update on work - July 2021

  Building the bridge

  Work on our new bridge is progressing well. We’re now raising the ground on both sides of the motorway. This is where the bridge deck will join the roundabout. We’re also busy putting in new curbs, drainage and electric wires for the new lights. To reduce disruption to road users, we’re doing most of this work at night.

  At the end of August, we’ll be removing all our roadworks from this section of the M6. To make these changes, there will be three nights of full and partial closures from Friday 20 August. This is slightly later than originally planned as we need to finish the drainage work and make further preparations for the concrete wall.

  Working in Tabley

  Work also continues in Tabley. We’re putting in new traffic signals and a safe crossing for walkers and cyclists. We’ll be removing the closure of the right hand turn in into Pickmere Lane at the end of July. Overnight closures of the A556 in Tabley will then continue to August. Local diversion routes are in place and all businesses are open as usual.

  Week commencing (w/c) 19 July (Monday-Friday, 9pm-6am) – M6 motorway closed northbound and southbound between exit and entry slip roads. Up and over diversion route in place between 9pm and 6am. A556 closed northbound from A5033 junction and A556 southbound closed from the M6 J19 roundabout.

  W/c 2 Aug – Full closure of M6 J19 roundabout. All approaches closed – there will be no access to, from or across the M6 motorway at junction 19. Motorway traffic will continue to run from junction 18 to 20, northbound and southbound.

  W/c 9 Aug – M6 motorway closed northbound and southbound between exit and entry slip roads. Up and over diversion route in place between 9pm and 6am. A556 closed northbound from A5033 junction and A556 southbound closed from the M6J19 roundabout.

  The first thing you’ll notice as you approach junction 19, is that there are a lot of signs. This is because the signs we must use are specified by governing bodies and provide useful information to road users. We need to use all the same signs that you see on much larger projects, to let motorists know that the roadworks are up ahead.

  If you travel through the junction on a Saturday or Sunday, it’s likely that you won’t see anyone working on the roundabout. This is because we want to minimise disruption for road users, so we carry out most of our work from Monday to Friday and at night.

• 17 June 2021

  M6 junction 19 roundabout closure – 18 to 21 June

  We’ll be closing the M6 junction 19 roundabout again this weekend to continue the essential resurfacing work as part of our ongoing improvement scheme. The closure is planned from 9pm Friday 18 June to 6am Monday 21 June.

  There will be no access to, from or across the motorway at junction 19 during this weekend. Traffic on the M6 motorway will run as normal in both directions.

  

  We’ll also be closing the A556 from the junction with the A5033 northbound, as well as junction 7 of the M56 westbound. Traffic wishing to travel south will continue to junction 9 of the M56 to join the M6 south at junction 20a. A number of diversion routes will be in place which you can view below.

  Please plan your journey in advance and use alternative routes if possible.

That’s because we need to use all the same signs that you see on much larger projects. The signs we must use are specified by governing bodies and provide useful information to road users. Our signs let motorists know that the roadworks are up ahead. They also give notice of any changes to driving conditions, such as narrow lanes or speed limits.

• 10 June 2021

  June Closures

  In June, we’ll need to close the junction 19 roundabout overnight. These closures will be every Monday to Friday from 9pm to 6am. This is so that we can carry out important resurfacing work on the roundabout.

  We’ll also need to close the roundabout for another full weekend from 9pm Friday 11 June to 6am Monday 14 June. During this time, there will be no access to, from or across the motorway as the roundabout and slip roads will be closed. The A556 will also be closed in both directions. M6 traffic will be able to continue through the junction as usual, but not leave the motorway at junction 19.

  

  The weekend of Friday 18 June is booked as a contingency only.

  What to expect if you’re driving through the scheme.

  The first thing you’ll notice as you approach junction 19, is that there are a lot of signs. This is true if you’re travelling along the M6 motorway or on the A556 towards the roundabout. That’s because we need to use all the same signs that you see on much larger projects. The signs we must use are specified by governing bodies and provide useful information to road users. Our signs let motorists know that the roadworks are up ahead. They also give notice of any changes to driving conditions, such as narrow lanes or speed limits.

• 12 May 2021

  Upcoming closures and Statutory Instrument Consultation

  The new bridge across the M6 at junction 19 is starting to take shape. In April, we passed a key milestone after pouring almost 1000m3 of concrete to form the bridge deck.

  We’re now building the side walls, which will link the new bridge to the existing roundabout. We’ve also started work on the new traffic signals and crossing point just south of the roundabout in Tabley. This new crossing will allow cyclists and pedestrians to move between Pickmere Lane and Tabley Hill Lane safely. 

  We understand that the closures in Tabley are stopping some cyclists from crossing the A556. However, this is not a safe location to cross. There are four lanes of live traffic moving at speed to join or leave the motorway. To give advanced notice that this junction is closed, we’ve put up some signs. We’re also asking people to use a different, safer route until the new crossing is open this summer.

  Speed limits consultation

  As part of the M6 junction 19 improvement project we are building new link roads through the junction to improve connectivity between the M6 and A556. Once the new link roads are open, we’ll need to reduce the speed limit on the M6 exit slip roads to 40mph.

  We want to hear from anybody that may be impacted by our proposals to reduce the speed limit on the exit slip roads. We have therefore launched a consultation on the changes to the speed limit to gain your feedback. Head to our consultation page to share your views with us. The consultation will close on Wednesday 9 June, so please ensure you have provided your response by this date.

  June closures

  April Closures

  We’re planning two full closures of the M6 motorway at junction 19 in April. This is so we can pour the concrete deck for our new bridge. Both closures will last for approximately 34 hours.

  The times and dates of the closures are:

  • 8pm Friday 9 April to 6am Sunday 11 April
  • 8pm Friday 16 April to 6am Sunday 18 April

  The motorway will be closed between the exit and entry slip roads, with a short two lane diversion up and over the junction roundabout.

  We’ll need to close the A556 in both directions to allow M6 traffic to flow freely over the junction 19 diversion route. The A556 in Tabley will be closed northbound from the junction with the A5033.

  The M56 junction 7 westbound exit slip road will also be closed to reduce HGV movements on local roads. Traffic wishing to join the M6 southbound from the M56 should continue to M56 junction 9.

  We'll use a number of lane closures on the M6 overnight on the Friday and Saturdays. This will allow us to reline the carriageway to accommodate two lanes of traffic over the diversion route.

  There will be no full overnight closures of the M6 motorway between junctions 18 and 20, as there were during the full weekend closures in January.

  Please note: Traffic volumes have increased since we closed the motorway to install steel bridge beams in January. Expect long delays and plan your journey in advance, using alternative routes if possible.

• 09 March 2021

  Latest news and upcoming closures

  In January, we closed the M6 motorway at junction 19 for two weekends in order to lift 36 steel beams into position over the carriageway. This was a significant milestone in the construction of the new bridge, which will better connect the M6 with the A556 in both directions.

  Despite challenging weather conditions, we carried out the work as planned and are currently on track to complete the scheme as scheduled, this summer.

   

  In addition to lifting the beams into position, we used the full overnight closures of the M6 between junctions 18 and 20 to carry out additional routine maintenance. This included clearing 26 miles of overgrown vegetation, removing 200 tonnes of silt from 12 miles of motorway drainage, cleaning 600 gullies and 108 manholes, collecting over 800 large bin bags of litter and making 22 repairs to safety barriers.

  We’re making preparations to pour the concrete for the bridge deck in mid-April, when we’ll need to close the M6 motorway within junction 19 for approximately 36 hours.

  We’re also continuing to make improvements to the roundabout and surrounding road network, including widening the footway and installing traffic lights south of the junction in Tabley. The majority of this work will take place during overnight closures, which will be in place between 8pm and 6am, Monday and Friday. We’ve also installed a permanent closure of the right-hand turn from the A556 to Pickmere Lane to allow us to carry out drainage and electrical work. We’re aiming to open the new right-hand turn lane prior to completion of the scheme in summer. 

  We apologise for any disruption these closures may cause and thank all local residents and road users for their continued patience while we complete this project.

This is something we’re extremely proud of as the Scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice is designed to raise industry standards and requires us to carry out our construction activity with the greatest of care and consideration.   M6 junction 19 and A556 full weekend closures - 22-25 January and 29 January – 1 February 2021

  First weekend closure update

  Over the weekend of 22 to 25 January we started lifting  our steel beams into position over junction 19 of the M6. Despite challenging weather conditions, our teams worked around the clock to ensure that the motorway and surrounding road network was opened as planned on Monday morning.

  Unprecedented rainfall across the UK resulted in widespread flooding and a number of road closures in the north-west. One of the routes affected was the A49, which was the planned diversion route for the overnight closure of M6 junctions 18 to 20.

  Working with Cheshire West and Chester Council, we were able to alleviate much of the water from the carriageway. However, the rising level of the River Weaver had flooded the bearings of Acton Swing Bridge making it unsafe to open to traffic. As a result, an emergency diversion was put in place along the A50; this was used overnight on Friday and Sunday. Due to a burst pipe, United Utilities had emergency roadworks on the A50 also, which caused increased congestion. We apologize for any disruption this diversion route caused to residents, and that we were unable to provide advanced notice.  

  In order to complete the final beam lifts, we’ll need to carry out a second weekend of full closures starting on Friday 29 January at 9pm. If Acton Swing Bridge remains closed, the A50 will once again need to be used as an alternative overnight diversion route on the Friday and Sunday.

  Alternative diversion route 

  Please plan your journey in advance and use alternative routes if possible

  As part of the M6 junction 19 improvement scheme, we’re constructing a new bridge across the centre of the roundabout. We’ll need to close the M6 motorway in both directions within junction 19, for two full weekends in January 2021 to lift the bridge beams into position. The closures will be between the exit and entry slip roads so all M6 traffic will be diverted up and over the junction in two lanes.

  

  We have created an animation to show you how we plan to install the bridge beams during the closure.

  Please note there will be no viewing platform for members of the public to watch the bridge beams lift. Please do not try to approach the site during the weekend.

  Closure dates

  Weekend 1 - 22, 23, 24 and 25 January
  Weekend 2 - 29, 30, 31 January and 1 February
  
  

  The closures will start at 9pm on the Friday and will be removed by 5am on the Monday. Closure dates may change due to unforeseen circumstances.

  We’ll also be closing the A556 in both directions to allow the M6 diversion to flow freely. The A556 will be closed northbound from the A5033 in Tabley and we’ll be closing the junction 7 exit slip road on the M56 westbound onto the A556, to reduce the number of HGVs using local roads.

  Full closures M6 J18-20

  On 22, 24, 29 and 31 January, we’ll also need to close the M6 carriageway overnight in both directions between junctions 18 and 20. These closures will be in place from 9pm to 6am, and will allow us to widen the junction 19 slip roads to accommodate two lanes of traffic.

  Removing the closures

  At 5am on the Mondays, we’ll start to remove all full closures from the network. From this time, we expect traffic to be able to travel along the M6, A556 and other local roads as usual, with no diversions in place. Due to there being multiple closures on the network at the same time, it will take our teams up to an hour to remove all traffic management from the network. During this time, some lane closures and speed restriction may remain in place. We’ll remove all traffic management by 6am, when the network will be open fully to road users.

  Latest news and upcoming closures

  There’s been a lot of activity on our site during recent months. We completed the foundations for the bridge as planned in the summer and we’ve since started to build the bridge walls on either side of the carriageway and within the centre of the motorway. Once these are complete, we’ll then be ready to lift the bridge beams into place early in 2021.

  In September, we removed existing street lighting, traffic lights and signage on the roundabout and installed new temporary signals. This allowed us to start the next phase of improvements, including widening the A556 northbound as you leave the junction.

  We’ve also added a new yellow box across the lanes on the Tabley side of the roundabout, as you exit onto the A556 south. We’ve already noticed an improvement with traffic moving more freely around the roundabout and reduced congestion during busy periods.

  What’s coming up

  Over the next few months, you’ll see some more big changes as we continue to build the bridge walls in the centre of the roundabout. We’ll also start making preparations to widen the roundabout, and install the new permanent lighting, signs and traffic light system on the surrounding roads. 

  November and December

  Permanent lane closures will continue to be in place on the roundabout and junction 19 slip roads throughout November and December, so there may be some additional delay during busy times.

  Over the coming months, we’ll need to use a number of full overnight closures to allow our teams to carry out a variety of construction work on the roundabout and the surrounding roads. Each closure will be in place from 8pm to 5am, and we will keep the roads open on Friday and Saturday nights.

  The majority of these full overnight closures will be south of the junction on the A556 in Tabley, as well as on the M6 northbound and southbound exit slip roads.

  We’ll also need to use some full overnight closures on the M6 motorway when traffic will be diverted up and over the junction.

  There will be no closures from Friday 18 December, for at least two weeks during the festive period.

  Latest work update

  Most of our work so far has been taking place in the centre of the roundabout while we’ve been installing the foundations of the new bridge. We’ve now moved onto the next phase of work where we are building the bridge wall bases, which will support the bridge when it is lifted into place.

  We have also started work on the northbound carriageway of the A556, located just before the Green Bridge where we’re installing a specialised observation platform and acceleration lane. The construction period for this work is relatively short as we’re looking to complete the work and open the platform for DVSA and Police usage by late September/early October 2020.

  From Monday 14 September we’ll be closing the M6 junction 19 roundabout every night for two weeks. The closures will be from 9pm to 6am, and clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.
