A628 maintenance and improvement programme
We’re carrying out essential maintenance work along the A628 including resurfacing, renewing kerbs, drainage and lighting. This will create safer and more dependable journeys along the route. We completed a series of project last year and we're delivering more this year (2021-22).
It's important that all our roads are well maintained and the A628 is no exception. It's a vital route across the Pennines and is subject to some of the harshest weather conditions in the country. That's why our maintenance work is so vital - to keep you moving, and create safer and smoother journeys. Our team will be working mainly overnight to resurface sections of the route and replace kerbs along with electrical and lighting work.
The A628 is a crucial network route for an average of 9,000 road users each day. It’s a single lane route taking traffic over the Pennines enduring some of the most challenging weather conditions and continued extensive wear and tear.
The investment in maintaining this route will create safer, smoother more reliable journeys.
The drainage work will protect the carriageway from water damage and the resurfacing will ensure the route is free flowing, improving safety. Reconstructing retaining walls and barriers will also improve safety and create stability.
