The M42 in the West Midlands is a strategic route for local and national journeys, as it serves the east of the Birmingham metropolitan area and links London with Scotland. We understand traffic jams and stop-start journeys can be frustrating for drivers and when it comes to freight, every minute counts.

With a sharp increase in demand on our roads projected, we’re working hard to provide more capacity now which will help reduce congestion and make sure everyone, up and down the country, can continue to rely on our network. By upgrading the M42 and enabling the work of strategic partners, such as HS2, we’re playing an important role in delivering a huge investment to Solihull, supporting economic growth locally and across the West Midlands too.

Our ambition is to keep motorists moving today and moving better tomorrow. So if you’re planning a journey which starts, ends or has the M42 somewhere in the middle while we’re improving the route, check out these webpages for the latest roadworks information before you travel:

Over the coming weeks we’ll add travel information to help you plan journeys to the Commonwealth Games. Taking place between 28 July and 8 August, Birmingham 2022 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase the West Midlands on a global stage. We’re proud to be part of the team making the games a success!

This map shows the locations of all our major road schemes, currently in construction, between junctions 3a and 10 of the M42.
