We’re developing plans to improve the A1 between Doncaster and Darrington, to tackle problems with the current route and to make sure it’s fit for the future.
This scheme is one of over 30 that we’re considering around the country, as part of a steady and flexible pipeline of schemes. These pipeline schemes were announced in our 2020-25 Delivery Plan. We’ll be considering these for potential construction beyond 2025, but currently there’s no commitment from government to construct any of the pipeline schemes. To find out more about our pipeline of possible future schemes please visit our pipeline schemes webpage.

Through this scheme we aim to bring significant benefits to Yorkshire and the UK. Our plan is to provide a minimum of three lanes in both directions along the A1 in Yorkshire. This will enable traffic to flow more freely, cutting congestion which will:
- make life easier for businesses, commuters and local traffic – making quicker, smoother journeys for jobs and leisure
- turn the A1 into a reliable alternative to the M1 between the North East and Midlands, avoiding the busy Sheffield and Leeds areas
- support a growing economy – bolstering regeneration by giving businesses the confidence to invest, knowing that the A1 is a reliable and free-flowing local and strategic connection
It’ll also improve safety for all.
We will balance the need to connect people and places with being environmentally responsible. We’ll make sure that where we can, we minimise the impact of our proposed improvements on people, plants and animals.
