A590 maintenance schemes
The A590 is a trunk road in southern Cumbria, in the north-west of England. It connects the M6 (from junction 36) with the Furness peninsula, and passes through the towns of Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness.
We’re investing approximately £8 million over the next 12 months, maintaining journeys and safety for the thousands of drivers who use the A590 every day.
Along the full length of the A590 we’ll be carrying out a number of planned renewal schemes. These are essential in maintaining the network, keeping our customers safe and supporting the movement of essential supplies and services. While there are several projects planned along this 34 mile stretch, we’re working together to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.
Project information
The following projects are part of the A590 maintenance programme:
We’re planning to carry out carriageway improvement work at the A590 Greenodd roundabout. The work will include installing new traffic signs, repairing the road surface of the roundabout, and improvements to the road markings.
Our aim is to ensure we keep the network safe and operational, as well as improving journeys for our customers.
We’re planning to start on the 16 May 2021, and will take around two nights to complete. This will take place between the hours of 8pm and 6am.
For safety, temporary two-way traffic lights will be in place on the A590. Motorists will then be escorted safely through the site at 10mph. In addition to this, the A5092 will be closed at the junction of the roundabout, and a signed diversion route will be in place.
We plan to renew the road markings and road studs along various sections of the A590. The purpose of our work is to ensure we keep the network safe and operational, as well as improving journeys for our customers.
Work is due to start from 5 October for around five weeks. This will take place between the hours of 8pm and 6am, and will be carried out in phases. As our work is subject to weather conditions, dates and planned closures may be cancelled at short notice. Any cancelled work will be rescheduled at a later date:
