Today (Wednesday 03 March) Chancellor Rishi Sunak unveiled his 2021 Budget that included the locations of eight new freeports in England.

Freeports are usually located around shipping ports, or airports and are special economic zones with different rules to make it easier and cheaper to do business.

"Today’s news about Freeports is incredibly exciting and we would like to congratulate all of those involved. Not only will Freeports support our economic recovery by creating thousands of jobs, they will also attract innovation and drive clean, sustainable growth across the UK."

Matt Palmer, Lower Thames Crossing Executive Director said: “Today’s news about Freeports is incredibly exciting and we would like to congratulate all of those involved. Not only will Freeports support our economic recovery by creating thousands of jobs, they will also attract innovation and drive clean, sustainable growth across the UK.

“The Lower Thames Crossing will create better connections to the region’s ports, distribution hubs and manufacturing centres. The scale of the regeneration opportunities is huge, and we look forward to working with our neighbours to unlock the full potential of the region and play a key role in the Government’s plan to level up every corner of the UK. Together we will add billions to the economy, support tens of thousands of jobs and equip local communities and businesses with the skills needed to embrace our low-carbon future.

“We look forward to working with the Freeports as they get ready to open for business and we press ahead with our plans for the most ambitious road project in the country in a generation.”
