Community update - Spring 2022

Welcome to the latest edition of our community video newsletter – a short film to keep you up to speed on the project.

To shine a light on the variety of jobs on the project, now and in the future if the Lower Thames Crossing gets the green light to go ahead, we’ve changed how we make these updates.

This edition is presented by Nina, one of our new apprentices who joined National Highways after working for over 20 years in teaching, who gives you an update on:

• Apprenticeships – new animations showing how some of our new apprentices found their way to National Highways
• Carbon neutral construction - our role as a pathfinder project and plans to work with local businesses to explore carbon neutral construction
• New or improved paths – our plans for over 60km of new or improved paths for walkers, cyclists and horse riders
• A new consultation – from 12 May to 20 June 2022, give us your views on updated plans for a park in Tilbury, and some changes to the design of the project

Exploring carbon neutral construction

National Highways has made the Lower Thames Crossing a pathfinder project, meaning we’ll be looking for new and innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint during construction. 

To get the conversation started, we brought local businesses and stakeholders together at our recent online event, 'Road to Net Zero Construction' in partnership with the Thames Estuary Growth Board.

Over 60km of new or improved paths for walkers, cyclists and horse riders

For every 1km of new road, we are delivering almost 3km of new or improved pathways to encourage active travel and promote health and well-being across the region.

Our plans in Kent, Thurrock, Brentwood and Havering include new pathways and bridges, as well as improvements to existing pathways. These improvements will help better connect pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders to the area’s parks, woodlands, equestrian centres, heritage sites and employment centres.

Local refinements consultation – 12 May to 20 June 2022

Today we’re announcing a further round of public consultation, giving local communities the chance to have their say on some refinements to the project.

These updates have been made to the project based on feedback from our consultation in 2021, ongoing stakeholder engagement and technical surveys. Read more.
