What is the project?
This project initially involved refurbishing both metal and stone parts of the Luffness Mains and Fenton Bridges to keep them safe for all users.
Due to defects found at Luffness Mains Bridge, we're now planning to replace the old bridge deck with a new, galvanised steel deck, which will be stronger and more durable. Any damaged stonework will be fixed to preserve the structure for years to come.
Since like-for-like repairs are not feasible at Luffness Mains, the bridges’ appearance will change as detailed within our planning permission.
We're reviewing and considering repair options for Fenton Bridge.
What stage is it at?
Work started in February 2024 with a view to carrying out general maintenance of both structures. The work had to pause after finding that some of the defects to Luffness Mains Bridge were worse than anticipated. The road over Luffness Mains continues to be closed due to the poor condition of the bridge; however, the road across Fenton Bridge reopened to traffic in June 2024.
In late January 2025, further ground and site investigation works were completed to find out more about the existing bridge structure so that the design of the replacement bridge deck could be finalised. Full Planning Permission for the works was granted by East Lothian Council in March 2025. Design work is due to be concluded to allow the ordering and fabrication of the replacement steel deck.
Project delays and changes
Our early inspections showed significantly more corrosion and structural weaknesses than we had expected, which means we’ve had to adjust our approach. We also found protected nesting birds on-site, so work had to pause temporarily to follow environmental rules.
These issues have extended the closure of Luffness Mains bridge, and we know this has been inconvenient. We’re working on a revised plan, aiming to reopen the bridge as soon as possible.
This webpage will provide regular updates as we confirm a timeline for finishing the work.
If you have an event that may be affected by the delays, please contact us for the latest project information so we can coordinate to minimise disruptions.
Diversion route
A clearly signposted diversion route is in place throughout the closure. We'll work to ensure minimal disruption to road users and local residents. The diversion route includes roads such as A6137, B1377, Avenue Road, and others (details are provided on signage and local maps).
