Air quality - new
How we're improving air quality on and around our network.
Clean air matters to us all. We know that emissions from vehicles using our roads contribute to poor air quality, posing risks to people’s health and wellbeing. Poor air quality also adversely affects ecological habitats alongside our network.
The strategic road network serves a vital economic and practical function, enabling people and goods to easily and freely move around the country. We're committed to operating our business in an environmentally responsible way. This includes tackling sections of our network which have been identified as having poor air quality.
We have a legal duty to act where air quality on our network is above the legal limits. We've been monitoring and mapping air quality across our network to identify areas of poor air quality. It also helps us to see if there are measures we can deliver to help improve air quality in those locations.
To find the right solutions to help tackle poor air quality we've led a programme of air quality research and innovation, working in partnership with government and local authorities.
Over the last five years we've seen an improvement in air quality across the country, including on our roads, as drivers switch to newer, less polluting vehicles. We expect this trend to continue over the coming years and air quality will continue to improve.
