A11 concrete surface repairs and maintenance

We'll be reconstructing sections of the road, as well as carrying out repairs and maintenance on other stretches of the A11 carriageway between Spooner Row and the Thickthorn Junction in both directions. Work will take place during 2021, 2022 and into 2023 and will be undertaken in two phases. Phase 1, A11 Tuttles Interchange to Thickthorn started in October 2021 and was completed in February 2022. Phase 2 will include A11 Spooner Row to Tuttles Interchange and will start on 29 May 2022.

Start date 29 May 2022
End date June 2023
Cost £60 million

A11 Spooner Row to Tuttles Reconstruction Scheme, 29 May 2022 to June 2023

We'll be carrying out the reconstruction of the carriageway on the A11 between Spooner Row and the Tuttles Interchange in both directions.

Benefits

The scheme will help improve the safety of the road surface, but it will also provide a smoother and quieter journey for road users. Rather than repairing the potholes and cracking, the whole carriageway will be reconstructed and re-laid. Once complete, we expect the life of the road surface to be extended by up to 50 more years, with fewer future closures for maintenance repairs, meaning more reliable journeys for road users.

Traffic management

The scheme will use a contraflow system to keep the A11 open during the reconstruction of the road. This will mean that the carriageway will be reduced to one lane in both directions as we work, whilst the speed limit will be reduced to 40mph in order to ensure the safety of our workers and the travelling public.

We’ve tried to keep local traffic on the A11 during the construction of the scheme, but this isn’t possible due to safety reasons. We’ve also tried to find a balance in serving through traffic on the A11, as well as the needs of local road users, but we’re aware that our traffic management will cause delays on both the A11 and on local roads during peak morning and evening times.

The maximum expected delay for traffic travelling along the A11 near Wymondham during the construction of the scheme will be:

• Max delay of 14.1 mins for traffic travelling northbound on the A11 during peak times.
• Max delay of 10 mins for traffic travelling southbound on the A11 during peak times

It’s also important to note that some slip-roads will be closed for extended periods during the construction of the scheme. These are shown in the following diagram:

Image showing lane closures over different stages of the scheme

We’ll issue information to encourage through traffic to use a dispersal route, which avoids the A11 altogether, while stating that local roads are for local road users only, so we can help relieve congestion during this time. We’ll also continue to engage with the local and wider community throughout the construction period, ensuring everyone is fully informed so they in turn can make an informed decision about their journey.

Upcoming road closures and works

Over coming weeks we will be completing our preparation works ahead of the start of the contraflow. This will include surveys, holding repairs on the carriageway, removing road markings, installing safety barriers, as well as the installation of CCTV cameras and our contraflow along the route.

From 15 May 2022 until 29 May 2022, some of our work may cause additional noise between the hours of 8pm and 6am the following morning. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.

The following closures and traffic management will be in place, during this time:

PLEASE NOTE – this information has been updated with new dates and additional key information for road users.

3 May 2022 to 6 May 2022 - from 8.00pm to 6.00am each evening

The 40mph speed limit is in place while we continue our preparation works, ahead of the installation of contraflow for the scheme on 29 May 2022. This includes the installation of CCTV masts which are a verge-side hazard, and traffic is not allowed to travel at the national speed limit when such verge-side hazards are in place.

We'll be carrying out the reconstruction to sections of the carriageway, as well as repairs and maintenance on other stretches of the road surface on the A11 carriageway between Spooner Row and the Thickthorn Junction in both directions, during 2021, 2022 and into 2023.

The work will be undertaken in two phases:

  • Phase 1: A11 Tuttles Interchange to Thickthorn, which started in October 2021 and was completed in February 2022.
  • Phase 2, A11 Spooner Row to Tuttles Interchange, due to start in spring 2022.

Benefits

Phase 1 – A11 Tuttles Interchange to Thickthorn repairs

Our road repairs have extended the life of the road surface by up to 10 more years, creating a safer road that will also require less maintenance, resulting in fewer roadworks along this section of the A11.

Phase 2 – A11 Spooner Row to Tuttles Interchange road reconstruction

Phase 2 will help improve the safety of the road surface, but it will also provide a smoother and quieter journey for road users. Rather than repairing the potholes and cracking, the whole carriageway will be reconstructed and re-laid. Once complete, we expect the life of the road surface to be extended by up to 50 more years, with fewer future closures for maintenance repairs, meaning more reliable journeys for road users.

Phase 2 – A11 Spooner Row to Tuttles Interchange Concrete Reconstruction Scheme

Preparation work for the A11 Spooner Row to Tuttles Interchange Concrete Reconstruction Scheme started in autumn 2021, ahead of the main construction starting in spring 2022.

The scheme involves completely removing the existing road surface and some of the carriageway foundations, before then rebuilding the road with recycled material and an asphalt road surface. We'll also be installing new drains, replacing safety barriers, repainting road markings, and inserting new reflective road studs (cat’s eyes).

Upcoming road closures - phase 2

We’re continuing our preparation work on the A11 between Spooner Row and the Tuttles Interchange, ahead of the start of construction. Please refer to the dispersal route map to see the diversion route in place for the following closures.

Monday 25 April to Friday 29 April 2022

A11 northbound closure from Attleborough to the Thickthorn Junction between 8pm and 6am, Monday through to Friday.

During these closures, traffic management will also be in place across the Spooner Row, Browick, and Tuttles Interchange junctions.

Customers travelling northbound on the A11 will be invited to travel along the A1066 at Thetford before joining the A140 Northbound, and then joining the A47. Customers travelling southbound should follow this route in reverse.

Customers travelling southbound on the A11 will be invited to travel along the A47, before joining the A140 southbound, and then taking the A1066 to re-join the A11 at Thetford.
