A30 Designated Funds

We’re using part of the Designated Funds to support projects close to the A30 in Cornwall

Over the past few years, we’ve been developing several projects along the A30 in Cornwall which look to use designated funding to improve the surroundings of our network. This work includes looking at improvements to the safety and integration of communities through several cycling projects.


We’ve also been exploring how we can enhance the visual landscape, support cultural heritage and improve the biodiversity of the surrounding area.  


We’ve carried out the design work and some construction for an environmental work programme along the A30 in Cornwall called ‘Keyn Glas’. As part of this programme, we worked closely with local stakeholders to identify opportunities to protect and enhance the landscape, water, soil, air, biodiversity, and the historic environment.

We were recently awarded the Best Practice: Stakeholder Engagement award from the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management in recognition of this work.

Construction work completed

Green ribs

As part of our landscape projects, we’ve created some ‘green ribs’ which extend out from the A30. These aim to connect core habitat areas and achieve continuous landscape corridors.

This work included:

  • tree works (woodland creation, orchard creation and restoration, and veteran tree management)
  • planting of species rich grassland and wet meadow
  • restoring ponds and wet habitat
  • hedging (creation and restoration of Cornish hedge, thorny hedge planting, and hedgerow enhancement)

Last year created three green ribs at the following locations:

  • Ladock to Gwills
  • Benny Mill to Boswiddle
  • Benhaven to Lambourne Mill

Based on the success of these three pilot green ribs, we hope to deliver a further three green ribs depending on funding.

Landscape of Ancestors

This project aimed to conserve and enhance the condition of a group of barrows along the A30 ridgeline, west of Hendra Wood. As part of this project, we worked with Cornwall Wildlife Trust on some improvements at Allet Barrows. This included:

  • removing a wall between two ancient barrows
  • tree planting to boost existing vegetation and create a soft landscape corridor
  • building new fencing and gateways
  • creating a new footpath
  • clearing vegetation to allow views to be gained from the barrows
  • installing tourist information boards and benches

We were also considering some work at Warren’s Barrow but we’re not taking this forward currently.

We’ve now completed the design work for the below projects. As part of our design work, we reviewed the design of each scheme against our funding criteria and analysed the benefits that the projects would provide to the public if constructed. Following this review, we decided which projects we could take forward to construction and which projects didn’t provide sufficient benefits. Unfortunately, we won’t be taking the below projects forward to construction.

Water quality projects:

  • Upper Tresillian river project
  • Brighton stream project 
  • Bolingey stream project 
  • Arrallas Ponds (some design work ongoing) 

Biodiversity habitat projects:

  • Newlyn Downs heathland enhancement and restoration 
  • Adapting mineshafts for bats 
  • Carnhot county wildlife site 
  • Habitat connections on the A39

Cultural heritage projects:

  • Chacewater townscape
  • Zelah streetscape
  • Wheal Busy
  • Chyverton Park
  • Landscape of Ancestors (Warren’s Barrow)

For some of these projects, we’ve progressed the designs sufficiently so that if another organisation had funding available, a suitable design would potentially be ready to build.  


Cycling, safety and integration (CSI)

We continue to work closely with Cornwall Council to deliver the Saints Trails cycle network.

The cycle network is split into the following four routes:

  1. St Agnes to Threemilestone (via Chiverton Cross): the proposal is to provide reliable and safe crossing of the junction linking the B3277 from St Agnes with the A390. A cycle path will be provided alongside the A390.
  2. St Newlyn East to Carland Cross: the proposal is to connect the existing National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 32 at St Newlyn East with a new traffic-free path on Newlyn Downs and further complement and strengthen the case for the Perranporth to Newquay project.
  3. Trispen to Idless: the proposed cycle link between Trispen and Idless will make use of a designated ‘quiet lane’ and traffic-free path through woods and connect with NCN Route 32.
  4. Perranporth to Newquay: the proposal is the reinstatement of a dismantled railway line as a 10-mile multi-use trail for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. The Goonhavern section of this route was recently completed.

We recently completed the Goonhavern section within the Perranporth to Newquay cycle path. The planning application for the St. Agnes to Chiverton section has been approved and we’re expecting the decision on planning consent for the Perranporth to Newquay Phase 1 shortly.
