    Progress update – 7 June 2022

We’ve had to delay our final week of work due to other maintenance on the network.

We’re currently taking a short break, but will be back at the end of June. From Monday 20 to Friday 24 June between 8pm and 6am, we’ll be closing the eastbound entry slip from A270 (Lewes Road) and the eastbound exit slip at the B2123 (Falmer). There will also be a lane closed on the eastbound and westbound carriageways close to the Falmer junction, and on the westbound entry slip at the B2123.

To join the eastbound A27 during the slip road closure, please use Coldean Lane to join at the Hollingbury junction. Please follow signed diversion to leave the A27 eastbound by continuing to the next junction (Ashcombe / Kingston) and returning.

A lane will remain open on the main carriageway during our work. You’ll still be able to access to Falmer station, properties and bus stops as usual on the westbound carriage, however, the bus stop on the eastbound A27 at Falmer will be suspended overnight during the closures, with buses diverted via Stony Mere Way and University Way.

Thank you to everyone for their patience while we’ve been completing our drainage repairs on the A27 at Falmer.

    Progress update – 25 May 2022

We’ve had some delays to our work due to weather and needing to complete additional repairs.

We’ll be working away from the road at the start of this week, then we’ll be back on Thursday and Friday night. Between 8pm and 6am, the Falmer (B2123) westbound exit slip will be closed. To leave the A27 at this point, please travel to the next junction and return. There will also be a lane closed on both the A27 between Ashcombe (Kingston) roundabout and the Hollingbury junction, and on the Falmer westbound entry slip.

A lane will remain open during our work on the main carriageway and entry slip, and you’ll still be able to access to Falmer station and bus stops as usual.

We’ll then be taking a short break, but will be back in mid-June. From Monday 13 to Friday 17 June between 8pm and 6am, we’ll be closing the eastbound exit slip at the B2123 (Falmer). There will also be a lane closed on the eastbound carriageway close to the Falmer junction.

Please follow signed diversion to leave the A27 eastbound during the closure by continuing to the next junction (Ashcombe / Kingston) and returning. The bus stop on the eastbound A27 at Falmer will be suspended overnight during the road closures, with buses diverted via Stony Mere Way and University Way.

Thank you to everyone for their patience while we’ve been completing our drainage repairs on the A27 at Falmer.

    Progress update – 12 May 2022

Thank you to everyone for their patience while we’ve been completing our drainage repairs on the A27 at Falmer – we’re almost finished.

Next week, we’ll be working on the westbound A27 again. This work will be carried out overnight when there is less traffic on the road. From 16 to 27 May, between 8pm and 6am Monday to Friday only, there will be a lane closed on both the A27 between the Falmer junction (B2123) and Lewes Road (A270) / Coldean Lane junction, and on the Falmer (B2123) westbound entry slip.

A lane will remain open on the carriageway and slip during our work, and you’ll still be able to access to Falmer station and bus stops as usual.

We’re hoping this will be the end of our drainage work, however, if we’re are unable to finish as planned, there will be additional weeknight closures to get the work completed. Keep an eye on our Twitter and this webpage, where we’ll post updates as our work progresses, and provide details of any changes or additional closures.

    Progress update - 5 April 2022

This week our maintenance work will move to the A270 Lewes Road. Between 8pm and 6am each night, from Monday night until Saturday morning, a lane will be closed on the northbound carriageway between Home Farm Lane and Coldean Lane. This work will finish at 6am on Saturday morning.

While completing our repair and maintenance work, we’ve had some surprises, and have had to carry out additional repairs. This means this project is taking longer than originally planned.

We’ll now be continuing with our overnight maintenance work until mid-May, further details of these closures are shown in the Timetable of Works tab below. All work is being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday only, when traffic levels are lower.

If we continue to find more repairs are needed, meaning we’re are unable to finish our work as planned on the dates below, there will be additional weeknight closures to get the work completed. Keep an eye on our Twitter and this webpage, where we’ll post updates as our work progresses, and provide details of any changes or additional closures.

Thank you for your on-going patience and understanding.

    Progress update – 15 March 2022

Our work to repair and maintain the drainage system on and around the A27 at Falmer is continuing.

We’ve had some surprises, including a missing gully and some additional defects needing repairs, meaning things are taking a bit longer than expected. But we’re working hard to make up the time where we can.

This week will see us going back onto the westbound carriageway. The westbound entry slip at Falmer and a lane on the westbound carriageway between the Falmer entrance and the Lewes Road exit will be closed between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday, until 1 April. Please use sign diversion to join or leave the A27 here, by travelling to the next junction and back.

An escort will be available for anyone wanting to access the properties directly off the westbound carriageway.

On Wednesday 16 March, the road will remain open as usual until the football traffic has cleared from the stadium – this is usually around 11.30pm.

Maintenance and repairs continue on the A27 drainage system

We’ve removed the lane closures on both sides of the A27, however work continues on our maintenance and repairs to the drainage system.

This week sees us working on the eastbound A27. There will be overnight closures (8pm to 6am) of the entry slip onto the eastbound A27 from the A270 Lewes Road, with a lane closed on the main carriageway and the eastbound exit at Falmer. These closures will run from Monday 21 to Friday 25 February.

We need to dig within the footpath on the A27 eastbound entry slip. This means the footpath between The Keep traffic lights going east along the slip road will be closed on 25 February for safety, please use the alternative footpath on Stoney Mere Way. Our working areas will be fenced off, with the alternative route signed. Please take care around any of our sites.

Then over the following two weeks, we’ll be closing the lane closest to the central reservation on both sides of the A27 between the Ashcombe roundabout and Carden Avenue overnight (8pm to 6am), Monday to Friday. The road will be open as usual during the day.

    Central reservation work almost complete

We’ve almost finished our work in the central reservation and are preparing to remove the lane closures on both sides of the carriageway. As we needed to remove the safety barriers in the central reservation to access and repair the drainage system, these lane closures were essential to help keep us and everyone using the A27 safe.

We’ll need to close the road for two nights in each direction to remove the traffic management.

    Tuesday 15 February & Wednesday 16 February
    8pm to 6am

We’ll be closing the westbound A27 between the Ashcombe / Kingston roundabout and the Carden Avenue junction (Hollingbury) to remove the narrow lanes on the carriageway.

The diversion route during the closure is via A27, A26, B2109, A259 and A23 (shown below).

If you have direct access off the A27, escorted access will be provided to your property. Please make your way to the closure point at the Ashcombe roundabout where you will be met to be escorted to your property. We are unable provide access to the B2123 from here during the closure, please follow the diversion.

    Thursday 17 February & Friday 18 February
    8pm to 6am

We’ll be closing the eastbound A27 between the Patcham junction and the Falmer junction to remove the narrow lanes on the carriageway.

The diversion route during the closure is via A27, A23, A259, B2109, A26 and A27 (shown below).

If you have direct access off the A27, escorted access will be provided to your property. Please make your way to the closure point at the Braypool Lane roundabout where you will be met to be escorted to your property. We are unable provide access to the B2123 from here during the closure, please follow the diversion.

Please note these will be day later than we originally planned due to unforeseen issues while working on the drainage system. By taking an extra day, it means we can complete the work now and will not need to go back and cause further disruption for everyone using the road during the day.
We’ll be continuing with drainage and maintenance work overnight around the A27 junctions with the A270 and B2123 at Falmer until mid-April, with work being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am Monday to Friday only, when traffic levels are lower. More details can be found under ‘timetable of works’ below.

The road will be open as usual for the match at the Amex Stadium on 19 February.

Central reservation work approaches halfway point

We’re almost halfway through our repairs to the drainage system in the central reservation on the A27 at Falmer, and work is progressing well.

There's never a good time to complete this type of work on a busy road such as the A27, and we know the lane closures have been causing delays to journeys, especially at peak times.

We caught up with the project manager to get more information about why the lane closures are so important, not just for our team, but also everyone using the A27.

It’s important that we keep our drainage systems working as they should. They’re in place to remove water from the road, prevent flooding and help keep the road free of standing water.

The lane closures are due to be removed in mid-February. We’ll be carrying out further work on the drainage system overnight until the end of February.

Lane closures on the A27 for central reservation works

We currently have a lane closed on both sides of the A27 Falmer to allow us to safely carry out drainage repairs and maintenance work in the central reservation.

This may cause some delays, so please plan extra time into your journeys.

We understand that lane and road closures are disruptive, but they are needed to help keep our teams and road users safe while we complete essential work on our network.

We need to remove the safety barriers in the central reservation to access and repair the drainage system, and we cannot have the road fully open without these barriers in place in case there is an incident. We’ll be working around the clock to get this work done as quickly as we can.

These closures are both due to be removed by 17 February.

    Overnight closures

We’ll need to close the road to remove the lane closure traffic management, this will be from the 14 February, with a two-night closure westbound and two nights eastbound.

Project information

Overview

We’re carrying out repairs and maintenance to the drainage on the A27 Falmer and A270 Lewes Road.

We’ll carry out the work in stages and, for the everyone’s safety, there will be temporary traffic management in place around the A27 junctions with the A270 and B2123 at Falmer while we complete the work.

These improvements are essential for the safety of road users. Our drainage systems are there to remove water, for example rain, from the road efficiently and effectively. To continue to do this, the systems sometimes need to be cleared of any debris that has run off the roads or have any damage repaired.

  • Thursday 26 to Friday 27 May 2022 – 8pm to 6am

We’ll be closing the westbound exit slip and a lane on both the westbound A27 and entry slip at the junction with the B2123 (Falmer). A lane will remain open on the carriageway and entry slip road during our work.

Please follow signed diversion to leave the A27 westbound during the closure by continuing to the next junction and returning.

Access will be maintained to Falmer Station, bus stops and properties during this work.

  • Monday 20 to Friday 24 June 2022 – 8pm to 6am

We’ll be closing the eastbound entry slip at A270 (Lewes Road) and the eastbound exit slip at the B2123 (Falmer). There will also be a lane closed on the eastbound and westbound carriageway close to the Falmer junction, and on the westbound entry slip at the B2123.

If we continue to find more repairs are needed, meaning we’re are unable to finish our work as planned on the dates above, there will be additional weeknight closures to get the work completed. Keep an eye on our Twitter and this webpage, where we’ll post updates as our work progresses, and provide details of any changes or additional closures.
