    Road investment strategy 2020-2025

The government published its Road Investment Strategy (RIS) 2 in March 2020, covering the period 2020-2025. In addition to projects that government is asking Highways England to build during this period, it has also asked us to develop plans for more than 30 projects, including the M1/M62 Lofthouse Interchange. These projects may be considered by government for delivery in future Road Investment Strategies.

    Structural inspections under way

We've carried out a range of surveys and assessment work to give us information about traffic volumes and the local environment. We're exploring different design options that would meet our aims. We're beginning discussions with local authorities and technical stakeholders so we can take into account their views.

Structural inspections are currently ongoing and will be used to inform the requirements for any future scheme. Once we’ve worked up viable options we'll tell you about them and ask for your opinion.

Project information

We’re developing plans to improve the M1/M62 Lofthouse Interchange, to tackle problems with the current junction and to make sure it’s fit for the future.

This scheme is one of over 30 that we’re considering around the country, as part of a pipeline of schemes. These pipeline schemes were announced in our 2020-25 Delivery Plan. We’ll be considering these for potential construction beyond 2025, but currently there’s no commitment from government to develop this scheme beyond the current stage. To find out more about our pipeline of possible future schemes please visit our pipeline schemes webpage.

Please view a location map of the scheme.

If you have any questions about this project you can contact the project team direct M1/M62LofthouseInterchange@highwaysengland.co.uk

Through this scheme we aim to bring significant benefits to Yorkshire and the UK. Our plan is to enable traffic to flow more freely through the junction. This will help to cut congestion, as the roads become busier in the future, which will:

  • Make life easier for businesses, commuters and local traffic – making quicker, more reliable journeys for jobs and leisure.
  • Support a growing economy and West Yorkshire’s development aspirations.

It’ll also improve safety – reducing vehicle accidents and collisions and the delays these can cause.

We’ll make sure that we minimise the impact of our scheme on people, plants, animals and other natural assets.
